That's WONDERFUL to know.  I  now will request some documents that are "fishing

How fluent are you in Portuguese? When you go there, the clerks my not be
bilingual. If you are not bilingual, and they are not bilingual, then you
most likely won't get anything. If you are bilingual, go there and give it
a try. Maybe your clerk does genealogy and will do a small search based on
your range.

experience, would it be easier to try the Civil Registry in person or to write 
and request the documents?  I am asking because I want to make the best use of 
my travel time.

If you have a name, date, and freguesia. You may need a little more
identifying information,such as who was the spouse or deceased spouse. They
