RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry.com free immigration searches

2014-10-21 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
I have always found that offers by Ancestry are just a lead in to get you to
sign up. I have not checked this one out but I have seen some that the catch
is you have to sign up for a free 7 day trial which requires a credit card
and they hope you forget to tell them you don't want to sign up at the end
so you get charged for a month of full ancestry. It always takes an overt
action to stop them from charging you.

As far as immigrations searches I have had good success searching the Ellis
Island Website http://www.libertyellisfoundation.org/ and the CCA
immigration records. Both of which are free.

For anyone new out there, I agree with Rick completely. You have to be very
careful with Ancestry's free stuff.

If it's a 14 day free thing, you need to mark on your calendar when day
13 is and call them and cancel. And be prepared for them to try to talk
you into staying. They are a publicly traded company and need to sell
subscriptions to please the stock holders.

I tried this and it is genuine. I could view and download passport
applications, naturalization applications, and passenger lists without even
getting a sales pitch. Try to open anything else though and their sign up
box opens.
