John,

You are going to have to utilize the resources at the Portuguese
Genealogical Society of Hawaii. Then verify and double check what they gave
you. Just picking a ship that looks good and fits...well I know I can find
another that fits your scenario just as well.

Portuguese surname: Ponte. Portuguese given name: Maria Jose. The Rivera is
Spanish, not Portuguese. I don't know if you are trying to say Ribeiro or
what.

Start with your immigrant ancestors, not their parents. Find every piece of
paper you can on them. Sao Miguel holds half the population of the Azores.
You are looking for a needle in a haystack. The date of 27 Sep 1879 could
be a little off too. Many of our immigrants didn't know their exact birth
date or they used their baptism date.

Here's a how to guide full of things to do on your immigrant ancestor:

Good luck, Cheri Mello

Researching: São Miguel island: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente,
Ribeira das Tainhas, Achada
