I have Pingao in my line: Medeiros Pingao. They used Pingao on the ship passenger list from Sao Miguel to Hawaii, but they dropped it when they moved to California and just used Medeiros. Eric, Adding to what you said about the Canhoto alcunha on Flores, I once helped a fellow (now deceased) with a Canhoto in his family tree. He was born in the US and I helped him research his Flores family tree. Somehow he didn't quite get it because he always said that among other families, he was researching the Canhoto family from Flores. Researching in Terceira just now and was reminded of your Canhoto nickname.I have 8 people using that as a surname, most from Terceira and ranging from the 1500s to 1800s.There are Fernandes Canhoto, Gomes Canhoto, Cardoso Canhoto, Machado Canhoto and Vieira Canhoto.I'm sure you know, but some might not realize that a great many surnames today started as a nickname.Even Furtado, for instance.To an English speaker, it's often funny to translate surnames. It's not Portuguese, but just tonight we were having salad with bacon bits and my in-laws from Slovakia were saying the word "slanin" and so I asked my son if he knew what that means and he says "bacon." Some I am able to translate, two are also used as surnames by some families Bonito(Handsome) and Craveiro others I found are Touro(Bull), Toucinho(bacon), Caipiras(Countrified, the American version I think would be Redneck), Zarigo, Burrinha(Donkey), Carocha(Bug), Zidro, Pe de Galinha(Chicken Foot, very interesting!) I have also noticed that some of my lines didn't have alcunhas recorded for some reason especially the one's that owned more property. I'm curious if anyone else would care to share their families alcunhas. Antonio, my Couto line, from Arrifes and Sao Roque, Sao Miguel, has Bonito for an alcunha, and I've seen it in church records and on passenger lists. I've seen other families with the alcunha Feio, so I guess my family was lucky. My maternal grandmother's Frias family from Lagoa, Sao Miguel, has the alcunha Malassada. Another branch of my family was called Pingao. I'm remembering this from many, many years ago. I was told the word meant squash, but my dictionary suggests that it means a very large drop. Antonio,We have "cebola branca" (white onion) referring to their head of hair from Angra.I found it interesting what you wrote about the Lajes do Pico families.On my first trip to find cousins in Piedade, Pico, I asked around for anyone using the "Leal da Rosa" surname combo and got that blank look from just about everyone. But one person thought there was a person he knew with that surname, but called Jose Serafim. He was right because first of all, Serafim is not that common so is a great choice to use as alcunha, and second it comes from his grandfather named Serafim Leal da Rosa. So I found him and many relatives. Showed me their wine-making, ate the fish they just caught for dinner.
