Booting isn't the problem, it is not having the image of the machine's
software that is the problem. I can boot DOS off my camera's Flash drive.
I can almost install Windows, but I didn't think to bring my collection of
MSDN CDs with me on holiday. That'll teach me.

There is no data on the machine, I tried to install the image from
SourceForge and it was too big... I didn't keep any on the machine's
internal drive in the first place, there simply isn't room.
I got a version of Ubuntu working from a Flash card, but it was very slow,
and almost every dialogue
It did nothing at all. Not a sausage.

It looks like you can boot off of a flash memory stick, and as error
17 is bootloader error, couldn't you put a small linux on the flash
stick and get going from there?
