17 is bootloader error, couldn't you put a small linux on the

Booting isn't the problem, it is not having the image of the machine's
software that is the problem. I can boot DOS off my camera's Flash drive.
I can almost install Windows, but I didn't think to bring my collection of
MSDN CDs with me on holiday. That'll teach me.
