[backstage] How legal is ... uktv2c.com

2008-06-16 Thread Brian Butterworth
Another wheeze, this time using the Slingbox software, to *charge* for the
BBC and other broadcasters online.

http://www.uktv2c.com/

Seems to be a server centre with some slingboxes. £200 + £60pm to connect
it to a Freeview box, £460+ £60pm+package fees to connect it to a Sky box!

But cruder than zattoo, but my question is either or both legal?

It just don't sound right when you read that website.
You know when the copy writing just makes a company sound really dodgy/sus
.

Because of the one to one connection offered by the Sling Box this service
is not in any contradiction to any of the existing viewing laws in the UK.

You may have seen similar services advertised, we are aware just as you are
that they do not work, that is why our prices are more realistic as we have
to provide you with the very best technology to ensure the very best picture
quality.

Sounds like a little kids done the copy. And what sort of name is UK TV 2 C
anyway.

Any company that can't spell 'see' correctly, or uses a Z at the end of it's
name to try and sound cool, I steer well away from.

=)

Hey Adam,

Is it possible you can play with [EMAIL PROTECTED]

auto-responder for us?
He's currently replying to every email on a large mailing list with his Out

If possible can you stop the auto-responder from sending replies to any
email with this in the subject line: [backstage]

Thanks Adam, would be much appreciated!

(Nat - Thought I'd try this method, I have no idea who/how often a list
admin checks this list =)

RE: [backstage] More good news .. BBC to build web page for every TV show, says Jana Bennett

2008-06-16 Thread Brendan Quinn
As I don't think anyone has specifically said yet, there was some actual
news in Ms Bennett's announcement last week: the plan to merge
/programmes and the Infax catalogue (the now-defunct
catalogue.bbc.co.uk).

This means that detailed information about every show we've ever
broadcast will be available through the lovely /programmes interface,
with all the cast-lists, schedule information, and billing info
(actually much better descriptions than the listings from the radio
times, though it would be nice if they were included as well...)

Hope that helps to clear up those nasty coughs!

Brendan.

Cortado looks like a J2SE applet, not a J2ME midlet. Is there a mobile

[backstage] Nabaztags and BBC Radio...

2008-06-16 Thread Andrew Wong
Just wondering, does anyone here have a Nabaztag, and have they managed
to get it broadcasting streams from BBC Radio, eg Radio 1 or 6 Music?

Andrew, thinking of shopping for one... (this is NOT a BBC endorsement
of a French product, needless to say!)

I've got one a Nabaztag, but until BBC provide MP3 streams i've got no
chance of getting it to work.

Any chance something might be announced before this weekend as i could
bring it along and get it working.

Re: [backstage] Nabaztags and BBC Radio...

2008-06-16 Thread Sean DALY
I have a first-generation one, and when it works, it tells us the
local weather at breakfast time and blinks meaningfully (e.g.
consecutive blue dots=rain AND wind).

I say when it works, because their server reliability is awful, even
for the clock which is often off the hour or is not announced at all.
It's amusing, but I wouldn't count on it for anything serious such as
playback of phone messages.

To my knowledge the first gen Nabaztag cannot stream audio
continuously, I think there is a 45- or 60-second limit. It is also
WEP only :-(

The new one has a mic, handles WPA and I believe can stream audio. I
saw a demonstration on French TV, parents had recorded their voices as
MP3s and taped RFID chips in their kid's books, if the kid got close
enough to the rabbit it would recite the book.

They publish an API.

hope this helps

RE: [backstage] Nabaztags and BBC Radio...

2008-06-16 Thread Gareth Davis
I have one sat next to my desk now as it happens (actually a
Nabaztagtag), although ours is used mainly to announce problems picked
up by our Nagios system. It has been though a really bad period of
reliability earlier in the year, sometimes spending days unable to
contact the Nabaztag server. However the service has been much better in
recent weeks and the bunny has starting waving its ears before we get
the SMS in some cases.

I suspect RM and WMA streams are beyond it though. One of our partners
rebroadcasts a syndicated World Service schedule using mp3 over
Shoutcast so this should work if you substitute your serial (MAC
address) and API token (obtainable from the My Nabaztag portal):

http://api.nabaztag.com/vl/FR/api_stream.jsp?token=TOKENsn=SERIALurlLi
st=http://vprbbc.streamguys.net:80

And before anyone asks: We are also looking into alternative formats and
distribution methods over here at the World Service, in the same way
that James and his colleagues at AMI are looking at alternative formats
to the current Real and Windows offerings. MP3 or AAC over Shoutcast are
on the list of technologies we are considering, but we are a long way
from making any decisions on whether they are appropriate to develop
into a full service yet.

 ?

Yep. It's in BH now. I saw it last week, warming up one of the apparatus
rooms. And it's even working. Hopefully we'll switch stuff on within the
next month. Some niggles to sort out still though.

  2. Flash streaming just works for most people, and as the TV iPlayer
 has
shown, a tremendously popular way of consuming content.
Not on mobiles. How about an Ogg stream with Cortado[1] for mobiles
(or other people who dislike Flash).

Agreed. We have plans on mobile also, though any solution must just work.
Yes, we're providing a ton of extra streams in different formats for wifi
radios and the like to use; no, Ogg Vorbis is not one of them. I refer the
gentleman to the answers I gave here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/radiolabs/2008/03/streaming_radio_online_your_co_1.shtml

Not sure whether our streaming will work on Gnash or not, incidentally. I'd
think, for a while at least, it will.

 3. HTTP downloads are not possible
I think the idea was to stream over HTTP. (or something that is
similar enough to streaming that no one notices).

RTMP or RTSP is streaming. Nobody (using Flash) will notice it's any
different to any other experience they have. Again, it must just work.
HTTP streaming is less good for Content Restriction And Protection. (Again,
sorry we have to put crp in our streams in this way, but we do.) (Yes, the
abbreviation is intentional).

I'm sorry we have to use it. But we have to use it.
Is there no a more open streaming protocol one could use?

Again, back to the Content Restriction And Protection issue; but also
coupled with the knowledge that a typical user wants something that just
works.

 5. A pop-up player will continue to be available in iPlayer when radio
  moves in.
Unfortunately there is not much the BBC can really do about stay on
top however. If the OS/Browser don't provide it then you're out of
luck. Some OSes let any window stay on top.

Yep, agreed. We can't provide stay on top with anything internet, without
a software product, which people don't, generally, download. (Sweeping
generalisation, but my experience).

If only browsers supported video[2] and audio tags, and if there
was actually some base codecs defined that would work on any browser.
 (chicken/egg?)

Ye... to a point. There are some base codecs defined that work on any
browser with Flash installed (ie virtually all of them); and that's the way
that the world is going.

  Beer, anyone?
 Are you buying? ;)

Nope. You? Mine's the guest ale.
