Re: [backstage] OT - Mobile Broadband
Hi Frank, it appears that 3 don't really care about the device you're using to tether with, as long as they get paid for the bandwidth you use. I've used an unlocked (was originally on T-Mobile) N-Series phone with their prepaid Mobile Broadband service for a while, and I haven't heard anything at all from them, despite them supposedly sending SMSes to users of non-3-supplied handsets. Re: [backstage] OT - Mobile Broadband
Hi TIA. Not sure about 3's service where you are, but at least for me up in North Yorkshire (in Boroughbridge to be exact), it's rock solid and fast enough to grab a 100MB file in a few hours or so, barring an occasional DNS problem which resolves itself within about 30 minutes-1 hour. I've heard the occasional horror story, but I've never had any fuss with them, for what it's worth. I'm not too familiar with their dongles, although I've never had problems using my unlocked Nokia N70 over USB with Linux to access their service. Your mileage may vary on Mac OS X, though. Just my 2p as a relatively happy prepaid customer of theirs. Tyson. I can run XP on the Mac via boot camp or VMWare fusion, but the Vodafone shop say the dongle still won't work with Mac hardware even if I have booted into Windows . this seems strange to me ... would have thought a usb dongle would work with Windows drivers irrespective of being on top of Mac hardware ... wondered, as well, if anybody has a Vodafone dongle and is using it under boot camp/fusion on a Mac. All of the USB dongles should work with a Mac, but you will probably need local knowledge to identify which networks have usable coverage down there. They should all have maps that show network availability. The T-Mobile PAYG lasts 90 days now apparently and the Three one might do - but that may just be you have 90 days to use the voucher and it then lasts for 30 days, which was the scenario. Both of them should sell you a dongle for ~£40 if you shop around. HTH f - Sent via the backstage.bbc.co.uk discussion group. Re: [backstage] not quite in the Backstage spirit?
Hmm, I bet this wasn't a very nice Christmas present from the BBC for Andy. Didn't they learn anything from the Dr. Who knitting saga? Tyson. Andy Alcorn is a student whose hobby is computer programming. Three years ago he designed a desktop widget for Apple Macs which allowed users to tune in directly to the full range of BBC radio stations and have them on in the background as they worked, rather than having to search out individual web pages to do so. He estimates that the free software has been downloaded at least 200,000 times. At the peak of its popularity, around 65,000 people were using it to listen to the BBC. In October he was contacted by the BBC, which had tracked down his private mobile number and home address. Was it to thank him for the extra listeners he had pushed in the corporation's direction, or offering him a job on the technology staff? No. Instead the BBC Litigation Department informed him that while the BBC does not object to the reference of the BBC services ... you do not have the authority to use the BBC logo and as such the use of it amounts to infringement of the BBC's registered trade marks and of its copyright. Alcorn was ordered to remove the logo from the widget, where it appeared in a little box enabling people to knoiw what they were listening to, and provide signed written undertakings that you have undertaken this step and that you undertake not to repeat your actions in the future or face legal action. All BBC logos have now been replaced on the widget with the letters B, B and C, and licence fee-payers can now sleep easier in their beds. - Sent via the backstage.bbc.co.uk discussion group. Re: [backstage] Google Chrome
Hmm, I haven't seen the links yet, but don't they want to make something like Unity or the ATT browser? (But with an InPrivate-esque feature).
