I see it as progress which is moving in the right direction, and very
good work(technically and diplomatically) on the behalf of several
developers and project leaders.

I don't think it is all that can be done (more content through that
method would be great!) but those who put in the effort should get a big
pat on the back!

2008-11-02 Thread Adam Leach
I have been using this service on & off for the past month with Totem
plugin in Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex.

Its great having all the podcasts, however does anyone know when the
news stories will have the correct video attached and not the video of
the Channel Tunnel being closed.

Shame the Dirac testing stream video has gone, that was a great example
of high quality video streaming and a decent cartoon.

Apparently, this is based on URIPlay (http://uriplay.org/), which was
presented at the OpenTech 2008 conference last summer.

Totem appears to be getting its (RDF) metadata from the BBC directly via
the URL:

http://open.bbc.co.uk/rad/uriplay/availablecontent

... so anything that can process that or do anything sensible with it
should also be able to partake.

(As the URL suggests, it looks like its under Rapid Application
Development so I'd expect it could change at any point in the future.
But this looks like wonderful progress from the BBC.)

Cheers,
David

As far as I can tell -

Free Sofwtare, DRM-free, Dirac, mostly radio for now but some video,
some geo-ip-locking.
