yeah I noticed my gaff shortly after I posted. as for the samba bug, i ended
up rebuilding the ubuntu server with 13.10 (this server wasnt in production
yet)
With the new samba version im not getting those errors on the sym-link folders
anymore.
so word to the wise for anyone having to do a

I don't know what bug you might be referring to, nor what basis in fact
you might have for this speculation. This doesn't seem like a likely fix
for an incorrectly specified exclusion in any case.

Yes, no, maybe (hint: it would depend on the NAS...)
Depends on what kind of NAS you're buying. If you're getting something
that's a true linux OS, then yes. If not, then no.
What I do here is run backuppc on a VM, and mount a network drive to the
NAS. Works perfectly.
