Dave,
in my e-mail from several days ago you'll find an error log that shows up when
using the newest version of smbclient. I used Debian however, not Ubuntu.
I've downgraded now to smbclient 4.1.17 and everything works like a charm again.
Hint to Debian users:

Hi everyone,
I'm having issues doing backups on samba shares. I'm currently using Ubuntu
Trusty and Backuppc 3.3.0 with smbclient 4.3.8.
I think this is happening since the update of samba to the latest version.
Any clue on how to solve this?
Kind regards,
Ariel

just in case this helps someone, I've to downgrade samba to 4.1.6 by doing:
apt-get install samba=2:4.1.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2
samba-common=2:4.1.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2 samba-common-bin=2:4.1.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2
samba-libs=2:4.1.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2 python-samba=2:4.1.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2
samba-dsdb-modules=2:4.1.6+dfsg-1ubu

required a restore. So I moved the pool disk to another computer (system B),
installed backuppc on that computer, booted system A off of a live CD, and
prepared for a restore.
However, system B assigned a different
I had similar problem. after Samba upgrade to 4.3.8. The main problem after
upgrade was smb backups crashing, so I downgraded Samba to version 4.1.6, and
UTF-8 problem is gone also.
