[BackupPC-users] Obnam 1.0 - all backups are snapshots

2012-06-07 Thread Neal Becker
I thought this article on obnam was interesting. I was interested in the idea that there are no incremental/full backups - all backups are just a snapshot. http://lwn.net/SubscriberLink/500443/1f1dd755c5ca12d4/ --

[BackupPC-users] cheap encryption

2012-05-30 Thread Neal Becker
Using rsync (via ssh), default is aes encryption, which is expensive. I wanted to try setting Host * Ciphers arcfour,blowfish-cbc I put that in user backuppc .ssh/config, but that didn't seem to work (according to the output of ps, not showing the args to ssh). I did find that putting it in

[BackupPC-users] backup vs. restore

2012-05-29 Thread Neal Becker
I need to do a restore in the morning. If I start the restore before the normally-scheduled backup, will that block the backup until the restore is complete? I would think it would be a bad thing to try to run the backup while the restore is in progress.

Thanks. I got it fixed. A mix of f15 and f16 perl packages was to blame. Richard Shaw wrote: On Mon, Dec 5, 2011 at 7:16 PM, Neal Becker ndbeck...@gmail.com wrote: Just updated my backuppc server from fedora 15 to fedora 16. Now backuppc won't start, but gives: Dec 5 20:06:43 nbecker6

[BackupPC-users] fixed (was Re: Let me get to the real point)

Well, it's working again. Not sure what broke it. When I had reinstalled backuppc from scratch (wiping /var/lib/BackupPC), I had re-used my old /etc/backuppc config. Now I just a new, clean /etc/backuppc (just adding my host and share). Something in the old config that backuppc didn't like, I

OK, so I did a new test today. 1. I did a complete reinstall of backuppc on the server. I removed all existing data from /var/lib/backuppc 2. I ran backup manually: /usr/share/BackupPC/bin/BackupPC_dump -v -f nbecker1 [ blah blah ...] .: md4 doesn't match: will retry in phase 1; file
