Using your last suggestion, that of changing the script "You can reinstall
fresh and choose another style for the backuppc user (change the adduser
command by removing --shell /bin/false and --system)" I removed the
"--system" and the "--shell /bin/false" and I got the following error:

The symptoms you are getting are due to how I designed the script with
backuppc being a system user without shell etc. As such, it is not
related to BackupPC version - you can make BackupPC 4 work the way you
are used to.
