I suppose, this won't work since the pool files need to be hardlinked to
the backup directories, so everything needs to be in GFS.

Of course, you could have multiple servers access the same file system
by using different hosts files. Then you'd need to tweak BackupPC to run
BackupPC_nightly only on one server (or disable it and use cron and
distribute the nightly runs across servers, each doing a part of the
pool - stats won't be useful then).

If you run a recent version of samba, it supports hardlinks. Windows XP and
higher support hardlinks with their version of NTFS and this does work quite
well over samba.

BackupPC doesn't care where the data is stored. It only needs a
filesystem which is available locally _and supports hardlinks_.

So, if you manage to somehow mount your Windows' NTFS to your BackupPC
server, it should work since NTFS supports hardlinks. I'd test that
rather intensive, though.

Re: [BackupPC-users] splitting backups... how?

2008-06-01 Thread dan
I should have said that you could use a single pool/cpool and have different
pc directories on each server. then you could take advantage of pooling yet
have different servers handling different machines.

I have looked for some stats on how well GFS handles high I/O loads and
can't find anything. It says it is very good at it but has no numbers or
anything other than a sales pitch.

did you recently update the windows servers? any chance you have installed
a new antivirus or enabled windows defender? are you running active
directory? windows servers do so much self-modification with windows
updates or installed software or even changes to group policy and possible
exclusion of the backuppc username you are using that you could be getting a
few files and then a read error that kills the whole thing.

ok, so you know the username has read access everywhere, you havent change
any antivirus or antispyware.

have you updated the backuppc OS?

did you check drive space on the backuppc server? and check the setting in
the config of maxdisk usage?

can you mount one of the remote drives on the backuppc server and actually
copy files to and from?

how many filesystems do you have mounted on linux and what distro are you
running? could you be running into the maximum amount of mounted
filesystems?

you said the logs show 'some' files being transfered but not others? can
you create new files in the pc/servername directory on backuppc under the
backuppc username?

thats all I got, if none of these things are your issue i'm affraid i can
help :(

It looks like there is a recent bugfix for samba in RHEL5:

I don't know how that relates to the version you are running. Centos is

[BackupPC-users] $Conf{BackupFilesOnly} Problem

2008-06-01 Thread Richard W. Kulp
I have installed BackupPC 3.0.0-4ubuntu1 and been able to get smb
transfer to work but not as intended. The program wants to backup the
entire share, not the directories indicated in $Conf{BackupFilesOnly}.
Here is the client config file with the username and password changed
(I'll add directories if I can ever get this to work.):

$Conf{XferMethod} = 'smb';
$Conf{SmbUserName}='UUU';
$Conf{SmdPasswd} = 'password';
$Conf{XferLogLevel} = 2;
$Conf{smbShareName}= ['c','d'];
$conf{BackupFilesOnly} = {
'c' = ['/CitizensBank'],
'd' = ['/TSEPWin'],
};

Here is the log file for the latest attempt:

2008-06-01 15:41:57 full backup started for share C$
2008-06-01 15:54:50 Got fatal error during xfer (   43520 (  408.7 kb/s)
\Cygwin\bin\arch.exe)
2008-06-01 15:54:56 Backup aborted (   43520 (  408.7 kb/s)
\Cygwin\bin\arch.exe)
2008-06-01 16:02:01 Saved partial dump 0

Note that it failed on \Cygwin\bin\arch.exe when the hard drive filled.
Interesting that Cygwin was not one of the directories to be backed up.
Regardless of what I try, the program wants to back up the entire share.
No backup has ever been successful. The rsyncd transfer method never
started and the smb transfer won't complete because it fills the drive.

I would appreciate any help anyone can provide.

[BackupPC-users] Question about link pending.

2008-06-01 Thread Bruno Faria
Hi,

I've posted a similar a question before but since I didn't get any response
the first time, I guess I'll try again . :)

For some reason I'm getting alot of link pending. During the first backups
I didn't have any problem with link pending since once a backup was done it
would be done without any link pending. But whenever BackupPC_Nightly
started, all the backups are getting link pending for hours and hours
(about 7+ hours of link pending for each host).

So here are my questions:

1) Is it normal for links to be pending this long?

2) Would it be bad if I just increase the max amount of link pending on
the config.pl file to allow about 20+ pending links?

3) What's the job of link pending?

Thanks for help in advance!
