[BackupPC-users] Windows7 vshadow error

2011-08-12 Thread Jonathan Schaeffer
Hello,

this is not direcly connected to backuppc itself, but I thought I would
find people here with a good experience of my problem.

I am backing up windows clients to a central server using the shadow
copy system. It's alright for windows XP machines.

But I have an error on Windows 7. To sum up the whole thing, it's just
like :

$ vshadow.exe C:

Error during the last asynchronous operation.
- Returned HRESULT = 0x80042318
- Error text: VSS_E_WRITER_INFRASTRUCTURE
- Please re-run VSHADOW.EXE with the /tracing option to get more details

Of course, /tracing is not telling anything relevant (but I might be wrong).

Besides, the service Volume Shadow Copy starts normaly on the windows
machine.

I have to admit that I don't understand much about how windows is doing
all this shadow copy stuff.

Did someone come accross this problem and know how to repair it ?

Cheers,

Jonathan

Windows 7 uses a different version of vshadow than XP.
Also the command line arguments differ

Re: [BackupPC-users] BackupPC spontaneous server exit with SIGPIPE

2011-08-12 Thread Holger Parplies
Hi,

Carl Wilhelm Soderstrom wrote on 2011-08-11 13:16:38 -0500 [[BackupPC-users]
BackupPC spontaneous server exit with SIGPIPE]:
BackupPC 3.1.0 on Debian, kernel is 2.6.32, filesystem is xfs.

I have a BackupPC server that has twice now had the BackupPC server process
spontaneously exit. It *did* shut down nicely, interestingly enough. The
 server log (/var/lib/backuppc/log/LOG) is this:
 [...]
 2011-08-11 09:00:01 Next wakeup is 2011-08-11 10:00:00
2011-08-11 09:51:47 Got signal PIPE... cleaning up

as you probably know SIGPIPE means that the server is trying to write to a
socket that has been closed by the peer. BackupPC doesn't expect that
situation and doesn't attempt to handle it, because it only ever replies to
messages just received (from so-called clients; it doesn't seem to ever
write to backup jobs!) and new incoming connections, and the software speaking
to the daemon (BackupPC_serverMesg) doesn't close the socket without waiting
for a reply. I suppose it would be easy to implement a malicious client that
causes the server to crash, and apparently some error condition can also lead
to this.

It looks like there's no jobs running when the server exits; but obvously
when it gets restarted (by me) it runs a BackupPC_link job on the host it
was working on before it exited... so it's like the host 'hung' on doing
something in the backup, exited (timeout of some sort?), then when restarted
resumes where it left off and finishes all parts of the backup successfully.

The strange thing is that it doesn't seem to start BackupPC_link before the
crash. The daemon logs Finished full backup on host1.example.com when it
receives the corresponding message from BackupPC_dump. It closes the socket
whenever it detects an EOF on it (which would usually be immediately
afterwards, but there is really no way to tell from the log file) and then
queues a BackupPC_link if BackupPC_dump previously told it to. So, it would
appear that for some reason the socket isn't closed.

 This isn't the per-host LOG (/var/lib/backuppc/pc/host1.example.com/LOG) or
XferLOG (/var/lib/backuppc/pc/host1.example.com/LOG), so it's not obvious
how to turn up the debug level or otherwise try to figure out what's going
 on here.

I would insert debugging output into the daemon's code. You could try to add

print(LOG $bpc-timeStamp, qq{About to reply $reply to command $cmd
from $Clients{$client}{clientName}\n});

before line 1515 of BackupPC (syswrite),

print(LOG $bpc-timeStamp, About to send seed to UNIX socket\n);

before line 1557 (also syswrite), and

print(LOG $bpc-timeStamp, qq{About to send seed to $name:$port\n});

before line 1578 (you'll have guessed, syswrite again). You might have noticed
that I left out the syswrite in line 1500. I just don't think it's that one.
[Line numbers are for the upstream tarball, I didn't check the Debian package.
It's the second through fourth 'syswrite' occurrence.]

Don't forget to restart BackupPC after changing the code ;-).

It's happened twice, but I've never seen this host do it before. There's
nothing in dmesg or syslog to indicate a problem. Only thing I can think of
is that BackupPC is running into some sort of filesystem corruption that is
causing it to fail out rather than risk corrupting it further.

It seems to be in some way related to a hanging backup job, but I can't see
how the job itself could cause it. I don't see any code meant to crash
BackupPC in the event of filesystem corruption, but then, I'm not looking for
it (yet) :-).

Upgrading this host to BackupPC 3.2.1 may be possible (need to get buy-in
from some other admins before doing that); but before I do that
I'm going to fsck the disks. I've never seen BackupPC do this before on any
of the installations I admin and it's done it twice in a few days, so I'm
 suspecting hardware problems.

I'm suspecting something weird :-). For the moment, I don't see any better
option than trying to reproduce it with debugging output in place.

Of course, it could also be something sending a gratuitous SIGPIPE to BackupPC.
Does anyone know of any circumstances where a SIGPIPE would be sent to a
process *group*?

Regards,
Holger

[BackupPC-users] Tar exited with error 512 () status

2011-08-12 Thread Joe Konecny
I am having trouble making my backup work. I have been running for months with
no trouble. I mounted a usb drive and it went belly up and cannot unmount it.
The drive is no longer attached. I have tried umount -f and it still persists.
I'll probably have to reboot at some point but to get around that I excluded
/mnt/usb and then tried /mnt. Neither will allow the backup to continue,
I have /mnt excluded and not mnt. Does the exclusion need to be quoted?

Posting the BackupFilesExclude setting for the host in question would be
a good starting point... The usual place to go wrong is not having the

Do I need to manually edit the config file?

I think that says to exclude nothing from a share named /mnt/usb
 (which doesn't exist).

Well I'm confused. I'm looking at the docs. It shows...

 $Conf{BackupFilesExclude} = '/temp';

...for an example. So I assume I need...

 $Conf{BackupFilesExclude} = '/mnt/usb';

Do I need to manually edit the config file?

No, in the web interface 'new key' is for the share name (or * for all),
then you get a new place to insert the path(s) to exclude on that share.

Backuppc calls everything 'shares' even if they are the starting point
for a tar or rsync run instead of an smb name.

Other than the typo I think that is right. I normally add
--one-file-system to the tar and rsync arg list so I don't have to deal
with mounted devices. But then you do have to remember to add shares
for the mount points you want.

I know that now. I just entered /mnt/usb based on what the docs
said. I didn't know what the resulting config file actually looked
like.

Re: [BackupPC-users] Can`t Change {TopDir} Location . .

2011-08-12 Thread Holger Parplies
Hi,

saed wrote on 2011-08-12 17:08:41 -0700 [[BackupPC-users] Can`t Change
{TopDir} Location . .]:
(I am relatively new in linux world)

well, first of all: welcome!

That said, not all issues are Linux-specific. Reading documentation is a good
idea when dealing with *any* software, though the *availability* of
documentation may be much better for Open Source software that for what you
are accustomed to. But I see that you *have* searched for and read
documentation, so my point may have been unfair. Sorry about that. Admittedly,
the point in question is not well-covered in the primary documentation source,
and the relevant wiki page may be hard to find. Still, the question comes up
*often* on the mailing list.

Which is the other point. Please remember that you are posting to a *mailing
list*, even if you are doing so through a forum gateway. It is not possible to
edit e-mail messages once you have sent them, so that aspect of the forum does
not propagate well (actually, it *should* be disabled (I hope that was
ambiguous enough ;-)). I suspect that is what was causing the duplicates.
Honestly, if I've read your message once and find an apparent duplicate, I
*won't ever* check the duplicate for subtle changes, I'll just skip over it.

Also, while changing the title to indicate the focus of your question has
shifted works fine on the mailing list (as long as the references headers
are left intact), but the forum doesn't handle the references headers properly,
so changing the title there will break up the thread on the mailing list.

Another point is that we'll only see your current post, not the rest of the
thread [at least not without going out of our way]. Please keep enough
context (and please mark it as such!) for your question to remain
understandable. Regrettably, a new feature of the forum appears to be
removing quoting, so that it is indistinguishable what is quote and what is
reply - making the messages virtually incomprehensible. Consider joining the
mailing list, for the sake of your own and our sanity.

i did read the Documentation regrading the TopDir portion Copying the pool

Which part of the documentation (i.e. which document) are you referring to?

but i did not understand the script bin/BackupPC_tarPCCopy thats why i
 submit the question

You don't need BackupPC_tarPCCopy.

but here is what i did to make it work . .
 $ cp -avr /var/lib/BckupPC/*  /backup/Data/

Had that not worked (because you already have a large pool), you would have
needed BackupPC_tarPCCopy (or a more efficient alternative). When dealing
with a fresh pool, 'cp' will work just fine.

The whole point is covered in the BackupPC wiki:

http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/backuppc/index.php?title=Change_archive_directory

In particular, the sections Changing the storage location of the BackupPC
pool (which you have already done, but you might want to rethink your options
of making the new storage location visible) and possibly Changing the name of
the archive directory would be of interest to you. Note that you won't need
to copy any data - you've already done that part.

In a nutshell, changing $Conf{TopDir} only works correctly since BackupPC
3.2.0, not with earlier versions, but you *never* *need to* change
$Conf{TopDir}. You may want to for personal reasons, and that's fine, but you
should check out the alternatives first. Especially since you are new to Linux,
I'm almost certain you are not aware of the alternatives rather than having
actively ruled them out.

If anything on the wiki page is not clear, do not hesitate to point that out
and ask for clarification.

 ### knowing that /backupc/Data is a Directory i made for backup which resides
 on a Raid-5 LVM Volume
 $ /etc/init.d/backuppc restart
Shutting down BackupPC: [ OK ]
 Starting BackupPC: [ OK ]

Does that mean things are working now, or are you still getting the can't
create a test hardlink message in the log file? Which version of BackupPC are
you running?

Hope that helps.

Regards,
Holger
