OK Got it.
It might be helpful that if in the documentation it is mentioned that
__WHATEVER__ appears in a file, it should be replaced with the actual
value. (i.e. replace __TOPDIR__ with the path to the file which in my
case is "Backup/BackupPC").
Thanks... Tom.

For security purposes you might choose to configure the BackupPC user with
the shell set to /bin/false. Since you might need to run some BackupPC
programs as the BackupPC user for testing purposes, you can use the -s
option to su to explicitly run a shell,
Tom,
Those names should all be replaced with the actual names or paths specific
to your installation. When you ran configure.pl, the values you chose (eg,
the name of the BackupPC user, and the TopDir) are used to replace those
values.

If I try as suggested in your documentation
$ sudo su - __BACKUPPCUSER__
I get the error
su: user
I installed using the tarball from your site and ran perl configure.pl to
set BackupPC up.

What process did you use to install BackupPC (eg, from the tarball source
with configure.pl, or a package)?

This is an installation of version 4.4.0 on an Ubuntu Server running 20-04.
All of the various BackupPC environment variables such as __BACKUPPCUSER__
or __TOPDIR__ are missing.
If I try as suggested in your documentation
$ sudo su - __BACKUPPCUSER__
I get the error
su: user __BACKUPPCUSER__
