As most of you are probably already aware: spotlight comments are stored
per directory in the .DS_Store file.
I also experimented some more with xtar and found that all the resource
forks are stored in the .rsrc folder within each directory. This was
only backed up using xtar and wasn't backed

problems. However, when testing the backup and restore of a folder on

We use xtar at my site and it works great for OSX 10.2.9 and newer
(resource forks saved ok).

You might want to just use good ole' tar in 10.4. It will preserve
resource forks (unlike rsync) by creating AppleDouble files inside the
tar archive.
You might also want to disable ACLs if by some odd chance you have them
enabled. Here is what I use with modest success:
