Thanks, Richard. I just bit the bullet and did a new install of Fedora 25,
copied my scripts over, configured the machine, cloned it, tested the clone,
and upgraded to 26!

Now I'm working on installing backup pc

You'll have to do your best with dnf and see if you can get them to
uninstall... Something like (as root):

 # dnf erase 3dm2 3ware-status

If it balks at that you can add "--allow-erasing" to see if it can come up
with a complete transaction.

Dear Richard. You are a godsend! Of course I'd like to upgrade to Fedora
26 as it would simplify how much I have to maintain.

Ahh, so no, if you're running Fedora 26 then you don't need the COPR at
all. I am maintaining 4.X on F26 and up (for now that just means Rawhide
too, but that will be branched for Fedora 27 in the near future).

Hi, guys. Still working towards install of Backuppc on my Fedora. I
apologize that I got Fedora and Redhat mixed up. I definitely am using
Fedora!

At the end of the day today I somehow got it in my head that the
COPR/EPEL installers required Fedora 26. It's all new to me so please
excuse.

But I got this conflict during the upgrade process, which did not complete:

Error Summary

Those conflicts are with the 3ware 3dm2 software and the 3ware status,
which aren't working anyway. I couldn't get them to work. Those are the
GUIs for the 3ware raid card (3ware was bought by Broadcom). I've tried

All right, back to Fedora 25 and backuppc :-)

You should no longer need to modify rsync or anything so definitely remote
that. The package will make sure the needed perl modules are installed. If
you installed them via CPAN then you should probably attempt to uninstall
them, if you just installed packages via yum then it doesn't matter.

Ok, the "Redhat" statement bit me again, it makes me think of RHEL since
Fedora != Redhat. Fedora has been on systemd for some time so that is taken
care of by the package.

Got it. GOTHAM'S RECOMMENDATIONS HAD ME MAKE A NEW USER "BACKUPPC" AND
RUN APACHE IN IT, AND DO A LOT OF STUFF FROM WITHIN ROOT. Should I
delete the new user, change the Apache user back to default, and as much
as possible undo all of the steps he gave? Any harm in leaving the Perl
modules intact and the modified Rsync in the bin folder? I wouldn't know
how to uninstall a Perl module anyway off the top of my head.

Yes, probably best to wipe anything you've done manually. The readme

I could create a new package but that would require a package review and
even after all the work I've done cleaning up the package after taking over
maintenance on it I'm doubtful it would pass the current packaging
guidelines.

In either case the end user would be required to enable the Fedora EPEL
repository, it's not much more of a hurdle to install my COPR for it.
Additionally an update sits in updates-testing for two weeks before it can
be pushed to stable which means there would be a significant delay between
a new release and the end user getting it. Maybe after development
stabilizes a bit more it may be worth going through the effort.

Richard

But installing from a complete Fedora or Redhat repository instead would

Can't you name the package backuppc4 so they can have overlapping life
spans and updates? Seems safer than putting a same-named package in
a different repo where a future update will probably accidentally pull
in some other same-named package and clobber the one you wanted to

Because there's not really an automated upgrade path with the extensiveness
of the changes there's really not a good way to do it. I don't want to

Re: [BackupPC-users] BackupPC v4 for Fedora / EPEL Update

2017-05-09 Thread Bob Katz

Dear Daniel and Richard and group:

Sorry, I'm not familiar with all the acronyms.

I'm very excited to see a repository for Fedora/Redhat!

When I go to the EPEL repository page

https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/7/x86_64/

I'm presented with a plethora of possible downloads and I'm completely
lost, I don't know what to download.

Thanks for any help,

Bob Katz

Hi, and thanks for your packages.
Unfortunatly, it cannot be installed on EL6 as there's no par2cmdline
for this version. As this is an optional feature, could you relaxe it

It's apache, the previous maintainer defaulted the access to local machine
only... I may change that but I'd need to know how to do it in a generic
way since I have no idea what kind of subnet you're on. In my case at home
I use 192.168.0.0/24 so I had to modify /etc/httpd/conf.d/BackupPC.conf
from:

  # Apache 2.4

Require valid-user

  Require local

to:

  # Apache 2.4

Require valid-user

  Require local
  Require ip 192.168.0< HERE

Which would allow any computer on my subnet to access the server. After
that a "systemctl restart httpd" should work.

Thanks,
Richard

Thank you for that clarity, Richard.

The slight differences is how a user does this or that between the two
distros (CentOS and Debian/Ubuntu) elude me at times. For give my
ignorance, I have not used CentOS much over the years.

The "systemctl status" for both "backuppc" and "httpd" show them both
"active (running)" but "http://ipaddress/BackupPC/; still yields "Unable
to Connect" on the webpage.

Checked "firewalld" and added http access.

Now, "http://ipaddress/BackupPC/; yields "Forbidden You don't have
permission to access /BackupPC/ on this server."

Following the README.fedora I set backuppc user for web access but I am
guessing this, once again, is the different between the two distros and
I do not remember what to do? Is it permission issues between BackupPC
and Apache? Or is it user permissions?

Any thoughts?

No, you don't need to worry about configure.pl when you're doing a package
based install, it's already taken care of...

RPM based installations are never interactive like deb packages. I may
rename it but if you look in /usr/share/doc/BackupPC-4.1.0/README.fedora it
shows you how to setup the password access for apache.

It's assumed that if you're setting up a serious backup server that you
know the basics of setting up and starting services for your distro. The
short version is:

(as root after the above is complete)
# systemctl enable backuppc
# systemctl start backuppc

As the first attempt failed, the second went just fine.

EPEL repo installed.

Grabbed COPR and placed into /etc/yum.repos.d/ directory.

Ran "yum update" and then "yum install backuppc"

Just not sure what to do the start BackupPC running. The mentioned
"configure.pl" do not retrieve anything, links to a foreign (to me)
language page.

I envisioned install and then go to http://ipaddress/BackupPC_Admin but,
during installation I was never asked to create a web access password.

"Systemctl status backuppc" reports:

systemctl status backuppc
● backuppc.service - BackupPC server
   Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/backuppc.service; disabled;
vendor preset: disabled)
   Active: inactive (dead)

What's next?

I didn't think so myself but this suggests that you can:
 https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/installing-rhel-epel-repo-on-centos-redhat-7-x/

Their method #2 should work in any case, and I think the version of
yum in RHEL/Centos 6 and up will handle URL's directly so you could
shorten that to:

yum install
https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/epel-release-latest-7.noarch.rpm

Les, I am very much a novice when it cons to CentOS but I tried to
install the "EPEL-release" and yum said there was nothing to do (or
something along that line.) I took it that EPEL repo was already
available. (VM at home, I'm at work.)

Isn't it all the same? EPEL is semi-official for Centos in that that
 you can install EPEL by running
yum --enablerepo=extras install epel-release.That is, the release
package that installs the EPEL repo is available in the Centos extras
repo which is part of the distribution.

Oops, I need to add to the instruction, you'll definitely need to have the
Fedora EPEL repo installed as well...

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL

I could add it as a dependency but I don't like automatically installing
repos...

Thanks,
Richard

Thanks for this.

First, I will admit to being a little "green" to the manner CentOS does
a few things so, I'm about to ask newbie question.

I have fetched and located your COPR into /etc/yum.repos.d/ as
instructed.

Ran:  # yum install BackupPC

And get this near the end (of all the dependencies list):

---> Package mesa-libgbm.x86_64 0:11.2.2-2.20160614.el7 will be
installed
---> Package mesa-libglapi.x86_64 0:11.2.2-2.20160614.el7 will be
installed
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Package: BackupPC-4.1.0-1.el7.centos.x86_64 (hobbes1069-BackupPC)
   Requires: perl(Net::FTP::RetrHandle)
Error: Package: BackupPC-4.1.0-1.el7.centos.x86_64 (hobbes1069-BackupPC)
   Requires: perl(Net::FTP::AutoReconnect)
Error: Package: BackupPC-4.1.0-1.el7.centos.x86_64 (hobbes1069-BackupPC)
   Requires: perl(XML::RSS)
Error: Package: BackupPC-4.1.0-1.el7.centos.x86_64 (hobbes1069-BackupPC)
   Requires: perl(Time::ParseDate)
Error: Package: BackupPC-4.1.0-1.el7.centos.x86_64 (hobbes1069-BackupPC)
   Requires: perl-Time-modules
Error: Package: BackupPC-4.1.0-1.el7.centos.x86_64 (hobbes1069-BackupPC)
   Requires: perl(File::RsyncP)
Error: Package: BackupPC-4.1.0-1.el7.centos.x86_64 (hobbes1069-BackupPC)
   Requires: par2cmdline
 You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
 You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest

I also searched:

yum search perl-Time-modules

Loaded plugins: fastestmirror

Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile

* base: mirror.steadfast.net

* extras: mirrors.cmich.edu

* updates: mirrors.rit.edu

Warning: No matches found for: perl-Time-modules

No matches found

So, I tried adding "--skip-broken" . . . . (this is new to me.)

And the install "Skipped (dependency problems)" that included
BackupPC.X86_64 0:4.1.0-1.el7.centos BackupPC-XS.x86_64
0:0.53-1.el7.centos rsync-bpc.x86_64 0:3.0.9.6-1.el7.centos and 49 other
packages.

Ran: "You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest"

Still no love!

I will be away from my VM machine for the day and will not be available
to try again until this evening (it's early morning here, now.)

I have been using linux since 2002. I'm a Debian/Ubuntu guy. Sorry, I am
not that familiar with some of the CentOS rudimentary things a typical
Cent user might already know.

What to do?

Re: [BackupPC-users] BackupPC v4 for Fedora / EPEL Update

2017-03-29 Thread Richard Shaw
Alright guys, I went ahead and created a COPR for BackupPC...

https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/hobbes1069/BackupPC/

You just have to go in and download the repository file and copy to
/etc/yum.repos.d/

It uses the same name so a simple "yum update" should pick it up...

It SHOULD save the new config.pl to config.pl.rpmnew

I recommend doing a diff -Nau config.pl config.pl.rpmnew and saving the
chunks you need and reapply them to the new config.pl... If you had
customized rsync commands you may need to re setup them up.

May the odds be ever in your favor!

Thanks,
Richard

Unfortunately I’m not in that position or I would LOVE to. As of yet we don’t
have cloud backup.

Can’t wait to update 3.3.1 to 4.1. I plan to move my 3.x data directory aside
and start it from scratch on 4.x. I’ll trash the old stuff in a month or so.

I've got a test package running on my little Centos 7 box and it seems to
be running really well. I'm doing some final tweaks to the packaging,
trying to be really careful. If you're interested in a testing package (it
may eat babies, etc) then I can share it privately.

Now that 4.1 is out is there an updated idea when the EPEL package hits for
el7? I’m itching to see how much better my performance is running parallel over
our 10G connection, and what saturates first. The net or the CPU.
