I wanted to store the backup encrypted, so i used this:

https://rsyncrypto.lingnu.com/index.php/Home_Page

Basically i "rsync and encrypt" on the local machine to another
directory (only important files, not all the backup) and then setup
backuppc to backup the encrypted result.

The main crypt key i store in a (offsite) ISO and pendrive and
the local keys i keep on the local machine, so it easier to restore.

I like this setup and to improve would be great that backuppc
could manage it directly and avoid the local encrypted copy ;)

Good luck

leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a
simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or
a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.
Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of
the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are
being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and
exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.

And even over the local LAN, my setup is to use rsync over ssh. I also have
a separate user set up on each machine, so I don't hav to give my backup
machine root access to everything on the network.

Hi...

During the transport the data is transferred over a ipsec VPN tunnel.

Thank you for your input!

You might want to consider whether using whole-disk encryption plus a
Web interface to the backup data makes the data more secure or less so.

You might want to consider encryption of the data during transport.

I've been using whole-disk encryption with BackupPC 3.x for some years
with no issues. For remote machines data transport is encrypted using
OpenVPN, but over our LANs it usually isn't encrypted, just a password
for rsync, or access control via /etc/hosts.allow, etc.

Re: [BackupPC-users] Encryption and long-term storage

2012-03-18 Thread Arnold Krille
Hi,

On Sunday 18 March 2012 16:44:30 Justin Finkelstein wrote:
I've been reviewing a number of backup solutions to use for off-site
backup of a number of machines in our office and I've a couple of
 questions regarding backuppc:

 1. Is there a way to encrypt the data that's stored?

While we write encrypted tapes to kind-of-remote discs, storing the real
data encrypted is probably not a good idea because of the pooling. But you can
put the whole backuppc-filesystem on an encrypted disk.

 2. Is it practical to store a year's worth of data in BackupPC? i.e.
one full annual backup + daily differentials?
(i.e. how does this affect the time to restore a recent version
 of a file?)

Read the documentation about the number of full backups to keep. It can
actually be an array where each number denotes double the interval of its
previous number. So with [4, 0, 4] it means to keep 4 weekly, 0 bi-weekly and
4 almost-a-month full backups. [4, 0, 0, 4] means 4 weekly and 4 bi-monthly
full backups to keep. That is when you full-interval actually is 7 days...

Whether you keep full or incremental backups on disk is not important as
backuppc already de-duplicates the stored files. Its only a matter of which
files are transfered from the client to the server.

Have fun,

Arnold
