Going back to the very beginning of my troubles: It all started when I tried
to install a version of the programming language Smalltalk. At that time I was
running Opensuse 15.3. When I ran the installation as root something (a
trojan?) wiped the hard disk. I flashed the BIOS, installed Opensuse 15.5 on a
fresh hard disk, got a few things going e.g. email and then tried to install
Bacula so I can restore from backup. Installing Bacula went fine through the
configure, make and make install stages and I even started bacula successfully
but when I next rebooted I had another trojan take over the computer and that
was the end of that.
So perhaps I have got a Rootkit infection that can survive a basic ROM
reflash? I will try to install Bacula one more time, after checking that the
files I have downloaded are correct. If my machine get wrecked again after
that, I will have to junk it and build a new one.

 Thanks
