To ensure that I understand, here's what I think you want to do.

Use bacula for backups to disk-based volumes.
Create backups of these volumes to a tape library.
 Tapes are taken offsite.

You exactly hit the point :-)

I think that the feature of bacula you want is copying jobs, which is
currenly in development. However, I can think of a couple of things you
 can do.

That was my guess too, yes.

 (1) Bacula can use multiple catalogues. Use a second catalogue for
backing up (or archiving) the disk volumes to tape. You can set the
priority of the archiving job to ensure that it doesn't start until
after the backups have completed. You could also have a pre-flight
script that dumps the first catalogue and include it in the
tape-archiving. You could have a final (after archiving) job that dumps
the second catalogue. This won't be very large since the archive will
contain a small number of large files. You could probably save it to CD
or transfer it somewhere else for disaster recovery.

Didn't take that into further consideration yet, because I prefer an approach
in some matter of (2) (so does the customer).

 (2) Instead of tar use star. It can use different header types that
enable it to store ACLs and files larger than 2G. It also has a
multi-volume mode and a new-volume-script option. You can write your
own scripts to operate the tape-library using the mtx command. If you
are using multiple drives, you will need to use lockfiles or semaphores
to avoid conflicts with the user of the changer.

As a matter of fact, the library isn't there yet. At the moment, we are using
a single tapedrive as we are still in our pilot. Nevertheless I am already
able to test this procedure, as the volumefiles of our pilot don't fit to one
tape anymore.
So I was able to test tar with multiple volumes. As I didn't know star before,
I did some further research with tar. tar knows two options which may suite
my needs, which are --info-script and --new-volumescript.
What I am doing now, is to call a script, which ejects the volume, does
a mt -f /dev/st0 status and waits until the next volume is inserted and so
tar doesn't wait for someone pressing enterkey. It is in testingstage since
friday and it looks as if it works (will verify that on wednesday).
My plan is, to use tar with a modified script which takes the next tape in the
library.
As one of the last questions: What I don't get yet, is the difference
of --info-script and --new-volume-script. It is kind of hard to search google
for examples, so I hope that anyone on this list may provide some knowledge.

 Hope this helps.

It really did, thanks a lot.

 Kel Raywood

Re: [Bacula-users] recommended iscsi hba ?

2007-03-12 Thread HAWKER, Dan (external)

 Hello,

I'm using bacula with an iscsi storage array without any
iscsi hba on the bacula server (a dell poweredge 600sc). As
the cpu load is quite high during backups, I thought maybe an
iscsi hba would help a bit.

Would someone have a model to recommend that works well with linux ?

Hi Mikael,

I use a few Qlogic QLA4010C and QLA4050C iSCSI HBAs [1] on my iSCSI SAN
(EMC). All under Linux (we're a completely Linux shop server-wise) and
all work well. There are (or at least were, I haven't checked lately) a
few issues building the kernel module on *very* recent kernels (2.6.19
20) but earlier ones worked fine. Qlogic release their drivers under the
GPL and update them fairly often so seem to be pretty good. Have used
them under FC4/5 and RHEL4.

I've just had a look and it looks like the Qlogic driver has recently
been accepted for inclusion in the upstream kernel [2], the first for a
iSCSI HBA. This should make this even simpler :)

Re: [Bacula-users] Change in verification job tape selection time - deliberate or accidental?

2007-03-12 Thread Kern Sibbald
On Monday 12 March 2007 04:05, Troy Daniels wrote:
 Greetings Listers,

Last week I upgraded my Bacula install to 2.0.2 without any issues during
 the upgrade process.

All seemed to be working well until Friday, but that was only because I
 hadn't discovered this issue yet.

I run several jobs each night, with Full backups on Friday night and
incrementals every other night. Once the backups are completed I have
bacula setup to verify a few of these tape jobs against the catalog with
 Volume to Catalog jobs.

These verify jobs have a higher priority, so they shouldn't start until
after the backup jobs are complete. I also schedule them to start 10
minutes after the backups at 23:15. (All backups are scheduled to start at
 23:05)

This behaviour seems to have changed in Bacula 2.0.2 however. They seem to
launch immediately and select which tape they'll use for the verify.

Here's a log excerpt from a job running under 1.38.5 (My old version)

  02-Mar 01:09 backup1-dir: Verifying against JobId=6017
  Job=fs1.2007-03-01_23.00.00 02-Mar 01:09 backup1-dir: Bootstrap records

  02-Mar 01:09 backup1-dir:
02-Mar 01:09 backup1-dir: The job will require the following Volumes:
  02-Mar 01:09 backup1-dir:
  02-Mar 01:09 backup1-dir:09
  02-Mar 01:09 backup1-dir:

Even tho it was scheduled to run at 23:15, it didn't start until 1:09 the
next morning. This is the expected behaviour.

Here's a log excerpt from Friday night under 2.0.2:
  09-Mar 23:15 backup1-dir: Verifying against JobId=6101
  Job=fs1.2007-03-08_23.00.00 09-Mar 23:15 backup1-dir: Bootstrap records
  written to /export/bacula/var/backup1-dir.restore.11.bsr 09-Mar 23:15
  backup1-dir:
09-Mar 23:15 backup1-dir: The job will require the following
 Volume(s) Storage(s)SD Device(s)
  =
 == 09-Mar 23:15 backup1-dir:
  09-Mar 23:15 backup1-dir:10Tape
 OfficeAutochanger 09-Mar 23:15 backup1-dir:
  10-Mar 20:57 backup1-dir: Start Verify JobId=6125 Level=VolumeToCatalog
  Job=Verify-fs1.2007-03-09_23.15.00

As can be seen, the job started at 23:15, selected tape '10' and then
waited until the next night to run (Full backups take most of a day :) )
Meanwhile, the full backup ran, writing to 2 other tapes.

The problem encountered by bacula is that tape 10 had been removed from
the Autochanger on Friday morning and replaced with this weeks incremental
tape. So Bacula blocked, waiting for a tape, until I discovered and
cancelled this job this morning. Not ideal, but it did bring this issue to
 light.

What I'd like to know is if this was a deliberately designed feature, or if
it classifies as a bug? If it's deliberate, is there anyway to control when
it performs it's tape selection, or even which job it verify? I've scanned
the Jobs section of the latest manual but didn't see anything obvious.

For now I can either work around it(With a Run script running the verify
job), or even work with it (I've wanted to run the Full Backup job verifies
on Sunday for a while anyways.)

To the best of my knowledge there is no deliberate change in the way Verify
jobs are run.

You haven't supplied sufficient information, so I am not able to understand
the problem.

Regards,

Kern

[Bacula-users] latest incremental JobID for a client?

2007-03-12 Thread markjt
Is there a known/standard way to get the jobid for the latest incremental
backup for a client using
bconsole?
Or, does anyone have a tried and trusted method of their own?

I need the jobid for an automatic restore from one client to another, in a
bconsole shell script that is
run immediately after successful completion of a daily incremental job.

The current backup is not ideal because that includes the most recent full
backup. I need the
incremetal backup only (this is for servers with scheduled jobs for inc, diff
and full backups).

One way I can think of would be to separate the diff/full and icremental jobs.
I could create a job that
only does incrementals, and then use restore option 5. (select most recent
backup for a client) in
the bconsole script.

(This is for off-site incrementals that are taken by Attix off of a W2k3 backup
server. The W2k3
machine is the one to which the incrementals are restored.)

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Mark

[Bacula-users] Limitations of Running 2.02 Server with 1.36 Clients

Hi,

I'm currently running a 2.02 server dir and sd with mostly 2.02 clients.
However, two clients are running Debian Stable and the 1.36 bacula-fd.
These two clients seem to be being backed up and restored without
problem. Should I be worried that this will fail at some point?

Hi,
According to your scsilist, the Ultrium name is Tape0 so for the tape
you would use 'Archive Device = Tape0'.
For the changer you need to install the HP windows driver for you
changer. It will then appear as Changer0, and you would use
'Changer Device = Changer0'.

[Bacula-users] incrementals

2007-03-12 Thread Bill Szkotnicki
Hi,
I am backing up /home on one server to file storage on another.
I would like a full to happen 4 times a year and incrementals every
other day so I set up the following schedule:
Schedule {
  Name = homesched
Run = Fullon 1 jan apr jul oct at 18:05
Run = Incremental daily at 1:05
}

My problem is that after the first FULL backup completes OK and
incremental is supposed to go next and it seems to be doing another full
instead of backing up only the new or changed files.
Can anyone suggest why or how to fix it?
The clocks are perfectly synchronized on both servers.

Thanks

Re: [Bacula-users] Change in verification job tape selection time - deliberate or accidental?

2007-03-12 Thread Michel van Schaik
Hi,

We have seen the same behaviour as described below. When a Verify job is
scheduled to run before the last Backup job is finished, it will not
verify the backup that was running but the previous job that already was
finished at schedule time. So you have to make sure that a backup job is
finished before you can start a verify job of that backup Job in the new
version (2.0.x). The difference with 1.38.x is that with that version
the verify job picked the Backup job when it was starting the verify
Job, and with the 2.0.x version it is picking the Backup job at Schedule
time.
You can verify this behaviour when you start a backup and verify job
(with different priority) at the same time. The verify job will not
verify the backup job that was started at the same time, but the one
that finished before the verify started.
At the moment we don't schedule a verify job but we schedule an Admin
Job with a Runafter shellscript that will start the verify job, so that
the verify job will absolutely sure start after the backup job is finished.
We are running version 2.0.2 at the moment, so maybe the behaviour is
changed in the 2.0.3 version, I didn't check, but as mentioned above we
found a way to do a verify of the correct backup tape.

 02-Mar 01:09 backup1-dir:

Even tho it was scheduled to run at 23:15, it didn't start until 1:09 the
next morning. This is the expected behaviour.

Here's a log excerpt from Friday night under 2.0.2:

 09-Mar 23:15 backup1-dir: Verifying against JobId=6101
 Job=fs1.2007-03-08_23.00.00 09-Mar 23:15 backup1-dir: Bootstrap records

 10-Mar 20:57 backup1-dir: Start Verify JobId=6125 Level=VolumeToCatalog
 Job=Verify-fs1.2007-03-09_23.15.00

 Regards,

 Kern

[Bacula-users] backup job failing after 998.4 mbytes

2007-03-12 Thread Jason King
I have a backup job running and storing on a Dell PowerVault 110T DLT
tape drive. The backup job start fine and runs fine until it gets to
998.4Mbytes. After that the job stops and the tape is put into error.
The specific messages I get are these:

09-Mar 17:23 maint-dir: dctn.2007-03-09_17.13.34 Fatal error: Network
error with FD during Backup: ERR=Connection reset by peer
09-Mar 17:23 maint-dir: dctn.2007-03-09_17.13.34 Fatal error: No Job
status returned from FD.
09-Mar 17:23 maint-dir: dctn.2007-03-09_17.13.34 Error: Bacula 2.0.1
(12Jan07): 09-Mar-2007 17:23:46

I have 3 jobs listed under this particular file daemon and two of those
jobs errored out with 998.4 mbytes stored on the disk. The other job was
cancelled:

Terminated Jobs:
 JobId LevelFiles Bytes Status FinishedName
==
   210 Full 4,137998.4 M Error08-Mar-07 23:57 dctn
   211 Full 0 0 Cancel 09-Mar-07 00:47 dctn
   212 Full 4,137998.4 M Error09-Mar-07 17:25 dctn

There is about 9 gigs of data on this drive so i'm not sure what is
causing this. The second job that errored out is also on a different
tape. I wanted to make sure I didn't just have a bad tape first.

Anyone have any ideas?

Jason

If you are getting the error from check_bacula then you need to make
sure the password from the check_bacula invocation matches the password
in the fd.

As I understand your question, you would use the following (all on one
line),

./check_bacula -H your FD host or IP goes here -D fd -P 9102 -M
backup-mon -K 'yes_naya'

This is what is working for me. Try running './check_bacula -?' from the
command line to see the switches and their uses.

I think you should rethink what you are doing. Given that this is URGENT, and

quite careful about basing it on a technology that you don't fully master

is not yet officially documented nor supported.

If your request were not URGENT, I could see learning and working with the
Win32 version, which to the best of my knowledge works perfectly fine.
However, you would probably be much better off spending a very minor amount
of money and install an OpenSUSE system similar to the one you are currently
using. At least in the short term that might (must be carefully reviewed) be
a much less painful way to solve the problem.

as you can see in the bacula's scsilist.exe log, the device has no name

Re: [Bacula-users] Limitations of Running 2.02 Server with 1.36 Clients

If both backup and restore works, OK, it is probably a temporary solution.

However, it is not a configuration we have tested and one that we strongly
discourage running as there can be all kinds of subtle changes across two
versions. I personally would not trust any important data to such a
configuration ...

My problem is that after the first FULL backup completes OK and

Can anyone suggest why or how to fix it?

It might help to know what was printed in the log for these jobs.

[Bacula-users] Backup jobs start but will not finish

2007-03-12 Thread Jason King
I have YET to get a clean backup of one of my servers. It is a windows
2003 server with the SD and FD on it. The Director is located on another
machine. I setup the director to tell the FD of this server to send it's
files to the SD of this same server which has a TAPE drive connected to
it. The job starts and gets to a certain point then just stops and
throws the tape into error. The error messages in the email
notifications is as follows:

12-Mar 14:14 maint-dir: dctn.2007-03-12_14.03.14 Fatal error: Network
error with FD during Backup: ERR=Connection reset by peer
12-Mar 14:14 maint-dir: dctn.2007-03-12_14.03.14 Fatal error: No Job
status returned from FD.

(12Jan07): 12-Mar-2007 14:14:52

This is the common error message I get with every job that fails. I have
no idea what it means. Does anyone know what this problem is caused by?

I agree 100% with Kern - if you do not know the system and it is a
critical application - either master it or use the most common
configuration to get better support or look for something else.

BTW - I did not get the original message at all. The crazy ** blah,

Good luck

Re: [Bacula-users] latest incremental JobID for a client?

2007-03-12 Thread Arno Lehmann
Hi,

On 3/12/2007 1:01 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Is there a known/standard way to get the jobid for the latest incremental
 backup for a client using
 bconsole?

The only suggestion I have is parsing a query output. Or, alternatively,
directly access the catalog.

One way I can think of would be to separate the diff/full and icremental
jobs. I could create a job that
only does incrementals, and then use restore option 5. (select most recent
 backup for a client) in
 the bconsole script.

That would not work, because for the Levels to reference each other,
they have to run through the same Job. I.e. it would create two
independent lists of backups if you separated the levels into two Jobs.

(This is for off-site incrementals that are taken by Attix off of a W2k3
 backup server. The W2k3
machine is the one to which the incrementals are restored.)

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Looks like you, too, need copy jobs :-)

Do you backup to disk or to tape?

Backing up to disk, you could simply scp or rsync the volume files.

Of course, you could also use rsync to transfer the data to the off-site
system, independent of Bacula.

Arno

 Hi all,

Just after some advice about a HP SureStore E AutoLoader 818 I just
 picked up today second hand.

The seller I purchased it from on ebay has mentioned that the drive had
been tested and confirmed to be working ok but I'm having no joy.

I am able to backup a small amount of data via tar, use the autoloader
via mtx and rewind, check the status and so on with mt. The issue is
when I try and backup a large amount of data with tar it starts writing
to tape for around 20 seconds and then stops with the error:
 ---
tar: /dev/st0: Cannot write: Input/output error

Checking the logs I see this:

 Mar 8 23:58:38 localhost kernel: Info fld=0x2d0
 ---
 That looks bad.

I've checked connections and tried different DLT Tapes and the obvious
things, I'll try a different scsi card tomorrow just in case. It just
seems odd it backs up small amounts of data and not large amounts.

I guess my question is, is there anyway I can get a more descriptive
error message to help isolate the source of the problem or has any else
 had a similar issue?
Not a similar issue... but you might try tapeinfo on the drive.

Also could this be caused by the drive requiring a
 cleaning?
I don't think so. It should report the need of cleaning by an LED, usually.

Admittedly, I don't know your autochanger model, but it might help to
check the device configuration and reset it to its factory default.
Usually taht should work through the control panel somehow.

Also, HP has a tool for library and tape testing called Library and Tape
Tools or short LTT which you can download here:
 http://h2.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?pnameOID=406731locale=en_UStaskId=135prodSeriesId=406729prodTypeId=12169

 or go through this
 http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/ltt/index.html URL.

 Hope that helps you,

 Arno

Thanks for the reply Arno I'm downloading the HP tools at the moment to
see what it has to say.

I also grabbed some more info from dmesg, I'm now wondering if it may be
 the SCSI card or kernel:

This looks like a hardware problem.

Quite often, checking and perhaps replacing the cabling and terminators
helsp in these cases. It might also be a problem with the SCSI driver,
but you would know a lot about the drivers code to verify that...

For cases like these, I try another SCSI HBA using a different driver,
for example LSI instead of adaptec. If that driver works, you can be
quite sure it's a software problem.

I can't recall you telling us, but is that an Adaptec 2940U(2)W HBA?
There seem to be different revisions of the controller chips on these
cards, some of them buggy.

I looked through the drivers code once, and there were lots of special
cases for problem handling depending on the exact chipsat revision.

You'd better discuss this at bacula-devel, I think, or send Kern a mail
explaining the problem and the resolution.

 (very simple, because I'm not
a C programmer and also I don't know the logic of sd program). I made
the routine enter the retry loop even for ERNOSPC if file number is 0.
This made bacula-sd work correctly (but it took 20 hours to write file
0). After writing the EOF mark speed is normal again.
My idea is that changing the tape does not reset the EOD condition on
 the tape

That sounds like a bug, either in the hardware or the HBA driver.

until a file mark is written. I do not know if this a wrong
device or OS error, but I believe that the FD of tape should be closed
and reopened in a tape change.

I know about nothing about these details, so I won't comment on it...

dd and mt tests always gave correct results, but dd always write an EOF
mark at the and of the transfer.

If you have some idea about that I will be very happy. Thank you very
 much in any c asze.

Difficult problem, I think.

If this is a hardware or driver problem, I don't think modifying the SD
code is the right solution.

If it works for you - fine, but it might be that you have to manage that
patch for your installation yourself.

bacula setup to verify a few of these tape jobs against the catalog with

 02-Mar 01:09 backup1-dir:
Even tho it was scheduled to run at 23:15, it didn't start until 1:09 the
next morning. This is the expected behaviour.

Here's a log excerpt from Friday night under 2.0.2:
 09-Mar 23:15 backup1-dir: Verifying against JobId=6101
 Job=fs1.2007-03-08_23.00.00 09-Mar 23:15 backup1-dir: Bootstrap records

 == 09-Mar 23:15 backup1-dir:
 09-Mar 23:15 backup1-dir:10Tape
OfficeAutochanger 09-Mar 23:15 backup1-dir:
 10-Mar 20:57 backup1-dir: Start Verify JobId=6125 Level=VolumeToCatalog
 Job=Verify-fs1.2007-03-09_23.15.00

Doh, and I thought I'd described the problem well. Take 2.

Not sure what else to say about it. Maybe if I summarise it a bit more (My
previous attempt was a bit verbose)

When a verify job is scheduled under 2.0.2 to perform a Volume to Catalog
verify it now selects the job to be verified (and the associated tape(s)) at
the scheduled start time. It then waits until all jobs of lower priority finish
before performing the actual verify. This results in it verifying the previous
nights backup instead of the current nights one.

Under 1.38.5 the job wouldn't select the job to verify until it actually ran
(Actual start time instead of scheduled start time). In my case this is after
the job I actually want to verify has finished running for the evening.

This is the core of the problem I wanted to highlight, and you can see in the
above quoted email log excerpts showing the different times the job/tape
selection was performed.

Maybe an example will help too.

At 23:05 every night, backups of my servers are scheduled to commence. All
servers are backed up concurrently.

At 23:15 every night, VolumeToCatalog verify jobs of certain backup jobs are
scheduled to commence. These jobs have a higher priority than the backups so
they will wait until they are finished.

Under 1.38.5, the job to be verified wouldn't be selected until the verify job
ran. This meant it picked the job that had run that night at 23:05.

Under 2.0.2 the job to be verified is chosen at 23:15. The job I want to be
verified is still running,
