Ah. I thought it was perhaps some piece of hardware like a cable or somesuch.

Will investigate tomorrow and hope CentOS will have compatible version.

Director is running on Gentoo and Tape director Centos 7 IIRC. Suppose mixing
a rolling release with a non-rolling release was not my brightest idea.

[Bacula-users] Fatal error on catalogue backup

2020-01-31 Thread Ian Douglas
hi all

Can someone who knows please advise if this is an issue with my database, my
tape server, the tape machine, or the tape?

The director machine (this machine) died (power failure) without being shut
down properly.

Tape server is HP, as is tape drive. Tape was out of drive, and I shut down
tape machine and tape server manually (via power buttons) before UPS expired.

I've tried a few times, including restarting MariaDB and the tape machine.

Google search showed other people with similar issue, but few years ago.

Thanks, Ian

So noted, thanks.

I'm sure the tape is fine, the problem is that when we have power outages
during a backup my network goes down and then Bacula gets confused.

I have UPS on bacula-dir machine and tape drive controller and tape drive,
just one LAN switch that still needs to be connected to a UPS... and that's
causing the problems.

[Bacula-users] Why did Bacula not reuse an Error tape?

2019-06-03 Thread Ian Douglas
hi all

I suspect this has been asked before but can't find the answer ... maybe using
the wrong words on Google.

See attached, I was expecting Bacula to reuse this tape this morning, but
instead it demanded a new one.

Why would that be?

I tried to find the procedure for dealing with "error" tapes (since I have a
few due to load-shedding here), without success. :-(

Thanks, Ian

Let me try and upgrade Bacula on the SD box and see if that fixes things.

Okay, so if I want to "keep things stable" for a while, should I defer updates
of both MariaDB and Bacula?

I've got Bacula on three different platforms to worry about (Gentoo, CentOS,
FreeBSD).

Gentoo is not upgrading MariaDB yet, still at 10.1.31.
But this box (director and database) wants to upgrade Bacula to 9.0.6. from
7.4.4.

I think Kmail messed around in that folder when it upgraded.

[Bacula-users] Setting pg_dump version

2017-11-21 Thread Ian Douglas
Hi all

I updated my version of Postgres. Foolishly did it while Bacula was busy with
a long backup, but that's another story.

I'm on Gentoo Linux and followed their upgrade guide.

Anyway, normal backups run fine. However the nightly catalogue backup fails
thusly:

07-Nov 23:10 trooper-dir JobId 13399: shell command: run BeforeJob "/usr/
libexec/bacula/make_catalog_backup.pl MyCatalog"
07-Nov 23:10 trooper-dir JobId 13399: BeforeJob: pg_dump: server version:
9.6.4; pg_dump version: 9.5.8
07-Nov 23:10 trooper-dir JobId 13399: BeforeJob: pg_dump: aborting because of
server version mismatch

I have the following:

trooper bacula # ll /usr/bin/pg_dump*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 35 Oct  1 14:01 /usr/bin/pg_dump93 -> ../lib64/

So I'm guess that somewhere there is a config file that tells Bacula which
version to use. I've tried poking around on this machine, and asking Google,
all to no avail...

Can someone please tell me where or what I must change to tell the catalogue
backup to use the 9.6 version?

thanks, Ian

FWIW, and just wrapping up the thread for future reference, the problem went

FWIW when I was in a similar situation trying to get bacula-fd to work on
FreeNas (also BSD-based) I was recommended to mount the drive I wanted to
backup locally, and simply run bacula-fd on the Linux box.

It works. (at the expense of extra network traffic)

My issue was more to do with version mismatches than getting it to work but I
guess same solution could apply.

[Bacula-users] Could not stat "/mnt/nas1stuff/": ERR=Host is down

2017-06-07 Thread Ian Douglas
Hi all

Lately I've been getting errors like

Could not stat "/mnt/nas1stuff/": ERR=Host is down

where I'm trying to back up files from a NAS box (FreeNAS), and the target
folder is mounted on this box, as was recommended to me on this list.

So the folder does not get backed up.

If I run the job manually then it works.

Other succeeding jobs run right after the failed one work okay.

Oddly enough I tried from the command line and results were puzzling:

~ $ ls /home/ian/nas1stuff/
ls: cannot access '/home/ian/nas1stuff/': Host is down
~ $ cd
~ $ cd /home/ian/nas1stuff/
~/nas1stuff $ ls /home/ian/nas1stuff/

and that worked... so why would I get a Host is down message?

So now trying to determine where the problem is...

1. Bacula ?
2. FreeNAS ?
3. something on my system doing the SMB stuff ?

Something else?

I don't know if it is related but lately I've noticed a lot of up/down traffic
between this box and the three NAS boxes... even when I'm not actually doing
anything on the NAS boxes. Am just worried it's some malware encrypting my
drives. This box is Linux, the three NAS boxes are FreeNAS (== FreeBSD based).

Any ideas as to where to look to solve the issue gratefully received. Google
was not helpful, unless I searched for the wrong things...

Thanks, Ian

Odd that Director should die like that.

[Bacula-users] BLOCKED waiting for media

2017-01-03 Thread Ian Douglas
Hi All

Compliments of the season and all that.

Year is off to a rocky start. :-)

Was doing a full backup, around 3.5 to 4 TB so takes a while.
PC running Director decided to lock up for some reason (possibly related to
new CPU fan).

Now the job that WAS running (and all ones after it) are Error.

However tape director is stuck and won't let me do anything.

The tape that it wants is in the drive. It's the one it was writing to.

Device status:

Device tape is "LTO-6" (/dev/nst0) waiting for:
Volume: NASFull-0016
Pool:NASFullPool
Media type: LTO-6
Device is BLOCKED waiting for media.
Total Bytes Read=64,512 Blocks Read=1 Bytes/block=64,512
Positioned at File=0 Block=0
==

Used Volume status:
Reserved volume: NASFull-0016 on tape device "LTO-6" (/dev/nst0)
Reader=0 writers=1 reserves=0 volinuse=0

Data spooling: 1 active jobs, 4,058,134,331 bytes; 1868 total jobs,
50,000,034,684 max bytes/job.
Attr spooling: 1 active jobs, 0 bytes; 1935 total jobs, 151,992,356 max bytes.

I've tried mounting/unmounting/resume/restart etc in loops and combinations,
and Google is being spectacularly unhelpful, so now I need to ask the
experts... how do I get Bacula to either resume the backup (which is
apparently not yet possible in non-pro version) or at least stop what it's
doing and do what I tell it to do?

Should I just restart the PC running the tape machine?

Tried rebooting this PC (Director + database + also a FD) but does not help.

Thanks, Ian

[Bacula-users] Mounts and labels and all that jazz

2016-10-02 Thread Ian Douglas
hi All

Can't believe I'm having this runaround but I am.

Tape drive needed a new tape. So I unmount, put in new tape, and mount.

Guess I should have 'label' first.

But anyway, now Bacula sees the tape but insists it is unlabelled.

Automatically selected Catalog: MyCatalog
Automatically selected Storage: TapeServer
The Volume= on device="LTO-6" (/dev/nst0) appears to be unlabeled.
3905 Device ""LTO-6" (/dev/nst0)" open but no Bacula volume is mounted.
If this is not a blank tape, try unmounting and remounting the Volume.
02-Oct 14:19 TapeServer JobId 3159: Error: The Volume=NonNASFull-0015 on
device="LTO-6" (/dev/nst0) appears to be unlabeled.

I've gone around in circles with mount, unmount, label, including physically
removing the tape after unmount, but not getting anywhere.

Will some kind soul please advise the magic incantation to make this work?

Thanks, Ian

thanks.

But still not sure that's entirely correct.
I rebuilt a NAS. I had full backup of original.

After rebuilding, paths were slightly different, or at least the file times
were, so when I re-allowed daily incrementals it effectively did a full
backup.

Now, about a month later, it did a differential, again effectively a full
backup.

While differential was running, two daily incrementals were scheduled. I draw
a distinction between 'scheduled' and 'started', I'm not sure if you have the
same difference in your usage.

Anyway it ran two incrementals, both of which backed up the same data (as per
files and filesize in log). Both started hours after the differential was
finished, and the second over an hour after the first finished, with other
jobs inbetween.

My point is that the first incremental was done correctly, the second was an
unnecessary duplication, because (it appears to me), it decided too soon what
needs to be backed up.

Alf said I need to look at the 'duplicate jobs' setting, but that sounds like
a work-around rather than addressing the core issue, ie when does Bacula
decide what needs to be backed up... when scheduled or when run. The second
may be an exact duplicate when scheduled, but the data may have changed by run
time.

Thanks, Ian

[Bacula-users] Unnecessarily duplicating backups

2016-07-19 Thread Ian Douglas
Hi All

It seems to me that Bacula makes unnecessary duplicate backups.

I have
1. Daily incremental
2. Monthly differential
3. Annual full.

However one of the backups is over 3.5 TB, and the system only manages about
100GB/hour.

So the differential backup (in this case) ran for more than 24 hours. I also
had a others in the queue that pushed the time to when it could get to the
daily incremental to over 2 days later.

So...
1. Bacula did the differential, starting on Saturday.
2. today it did an incremental, for stuff added since Saturday.
3. it then did exactly the same files as in (2) again. I was watching.

I'm assuming this is because Bacula decides WHAT to back up at the time the
job is scheduled, instead of when it is actually run.

Is that correct, or is something else wrong?

thanks, Ian

Okay your explanation is clearer to me than what is in the manual. I was going

about it.

Will implement your suggestions, thanks.

Versions vary, Director and FD on this machine (Gentoo) are the same, 7.05 but
the NAS boxes are running FreeNas and I had to compile a version for them in
VirtualBox, don't think the FreeBSD releases are at that level yet. Also was
trying to back up a site on the net running CentOS 6, which had it's own
issues. Eventually gave up, could not get the remote FD and local SD to talk
to each other, I think the problem is somewhere between my firewall (IPFire)
and the SD (CentOS 7 on HP server). So now I rsync remote to here and backup
from here. Initial rsync took 20 hours so it's probably better that way.

It would be nice if the various OSs could get their act together and get the
versions in sync :-)

Okay thanks, will add that. I guess I will have to start the backup over, how
do I remove what's in the catalog so that I can reset the tape?

Is there a way to write to tape every 50GB or so? I see setting for volume
size but as I understand it (newbie and all) that that refers to the tape size
not the "chunk" size.

Thanks, Ian

[Bacula-users] How to recover from lost connection

2016-04-21 Thread Ian Douglas
hi All

Is there a way to recover from this situation?

I'm trying to make up a NAS drive with many TB of data. 4th attempt.

I don't know why it lost connection to the SD, box is up and running and has
not gone down:

ssh tapeserver
ian@tapeserver's password:
Last login: Thu Apr 21 08:18:40 2016 from trooper
[ian@tapeserver ~]$ uptime
 08:19:19 up 3 days, 15:41, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.01, 0.22
[ian@tapeserver ~]$

Any advice gratefully received... :-)

Comment: now that I read it again, it appears that SD spooled almost a TB of
data, without writing any ... do I need a heartbeat?

It feels like I should be setting some sort of "chunk size" that specifies to
write a block say every 50 GB or so, but I don't see any options like that in
the manual. Perhaps I'm searching for the wrong words.

Re: [Bacula-users] What does Volume="" mean

2016-04-05 Thread Ian Douglas
hi All

Kern thinks it is not a bug.

Can someone please advise what Bacula does when one or more of the machines
(eg SD, FD or Director) goes down while a job is running?

thanks, Ian

[Bacula-users] What does Volume="" mean

2016-04-04 Thread Ian Douglas
hi

I'm a new user ... hi to all.

Was busy with my initial backups, had some issues, and now Storage wants to
continue a backup on a non-labelled tape:

Writing: Full Backup job Backup2Nas-to-Tape JobId=63 Volume=""

How do I tell it to use the volume that it originally wanted, and that is now
patiently waiting in the tape drive? (Vol-0006).

Gory details are here:

http://bugs.bacula.org/view.php?id=2216

thanks, Ian
