[Bacula-users] Freeing some space...

2012-11-05 Thread John Doe
Hi,

I am using bacula 2.4.2 to backup on a USB disk and... I am running a bit
out of space on the disk.  So I switch from a 12 months full volume
retention to an 8 months one:
  Recycle = yes
  AutoPrune = yes
  Volume Retention = 8 months
But, as I understand it, bacula will just reuse more often the full
backup volume files that already exist and will not remove any no more
needed ones... right?
Is there a way to recover a bit of space by deleting those (no more
needed ones)?

By example, I have:
  -rw-r- 1 bacula disk  328533721 Nov  4 10:03 pc-03.full.v15

 This is expected behavior. 3.0.X clients and above will not
 communicate with older directors since there was a change in the
 protocol.

Ok, I compiled 2.4.3 in the meantime and it works.

  If I have to upgrade, is there a page somewhere listing all the changes I

 have to  start from scratch?
 You do not have to start from scratch. I started out with 1.34 over 8
 years ago and I am now using 5.0.3 in production at work and I never
 ever started over. There should be update database scripts to update
 the schema.

I will update when I have some spare time...

I have reason to believe that someone is using my pc without permission and
for now I prefer not to protect it with a password, because I'd like to check
the honesty of such person to see if this person is really doing what I
believe or not.
I would like to know if with Bacula I could see if someone opens my word files
in my pc even if they delete the voice from the list of recently opened files.

Bacula backups files.
If the person modify files (or files get touched), bacula will backup these
files.
So you could check the previous backup to see if you find backed up files that
you did not open/modify yourself (apart from the usual system files that change
all the time)...You can check the OS start time and some system events in the
OS logs.

Otherwise, you need something else like a spy program that hides and runs in
the background (and trust the creator of the spy software)...You could put a
spy cam, or hide under the table to catch him in the act...

[Bacula-users] Rename and move my catalog backups to a sub-directory...

2010-10-04 Thread John Doe
Hi,

I am trying to cleanup a bit my old bacula installation (2.4.2-1) and
I would like to rename my catalog backups (the files) and move them
to a sub-directory. Is it easy or is it now hardcoded in multiple places?

Here are the specific parts of the configuration:

  Device {
Name = FileStorage
Archive Device = /FILER/bacula
Media Type = File
...
  }

  Storage {
Name = FileStorage
...
Device = FileStorage
Media Type = File
...
  }

  Job {
Name = BackupCatalog
JobDefs = DefaultJob
Level = Full
Client = backup
FileSet = Catalog
...
Write Bootstrap = /FILER/bacula/catalog.bsr
...
  }

So I would like to modify:

  Device {
Name = FileStorage_cartalog
Archive Device = /FILER/bacula/catalog
Media Type = File_catalog
...
  }

  Storage {
Name = FileStorage_catalog
...
Device = FileStorage_catalog
Media Type = File_catalog
...
  }

  Job {
Name = BackupCatalog
JobDefs = DefaultJob
Level = Full
Client = catalog
Storage = FileStorage_catalog
FileSet = Catalog
...
Write Bootstrap = /FILER/bacula/catalog/catalog.bsr
...
  }

followed by:

  # service bacula stop
  # cd /FILER/bacula
  # for i in backup.*; do mv $i catalog/catalog.${i#backup.}; done
  # mv catalog.bsr catalog/
  # service bacula start

Would this work or do I need extra steps?

Thx,
JD

If you are not using the VSS (Volume Shadow Copy) option described in the

to backup those files, so be sure you close your applications (or tell your

destination = catalog
Send the message to the Catalog database. The message will be written to the
table named Log and a timestamp field will also be added. This permits Job
Reports and other messages to be recorded in the Catalog so that they can be
accessed by reporting software. Bacula will prune the Log records associated
with a Job when the Job records are pruned. Otherwise, Bacula never uses these
records internally, so this destination is only used for special purpose

 xz/lzma is another consideration. At moderate compression levels, lzma
 seems to be about the same or slightly faster than bzip2 with a little
 better compression. At lower compression levels it seems like it's
 about as fast as gzip while compressing noticeably farther - at least
 in the small amount of testing I've done so far with the xz
 implementation of lzma compression.

 (The small amount of testing I've done so far suggests to me that xz
 with a compression level of 1 runs about as fast as gzip4 with
 compression at or better than gzip7, approaching bzip2 for some types of
 files. Cranking up to xz 6 or 7 runs a bit faster than bzip2 default
 but tends to give better compression.)

Judjing by the following becnhmarks, lzma seems quite resource hungry...

  You can use the delete volume on bconsole ( this ensure not leaving
  orphaned file/jobs/volumes in db ) After that you can delete
  corresponding volumes. (I would tend to prefer this one)
 There is also the relabel console command. Volume has to be Purged or
 Recycle Status for relabel to work, so you probably have to purge before
 relabel will work.

The delete volume worked.

[Bacula-users] Renaming volumes...

2009-10-16 Thread John Doe
Hi,

I use a USB disk as storage and at first I had volumes labeled like this:

  Label Format = ${Client}.${Year}-${Month:p/2/0/r}.full.v${NumVols}
  Label Format = ${Client}.${Year}-${Month:p/2/0/r}.diff.v${NumVols}
  Label Format = ${Client}.${Year}-${Month:p/2/0/r}.incr.v${NumVols}

But, after seeing that the date is useless/confusing with the recycling, I'd
like to use this:

  Label Format = ${Client}.full.v${NumVols}
  Label Format = ${Client}.diff.v${NumVols}
  Label Format = ${Client}.incr.v${NumVols}

Is there a list of steps to follow or is it a nightmare?
Or, at worse, how can I restart from 'zero'?
Delete from the console and then the files?

Thx,
JD

[Bacula-users] Verify Fatal Errors

2009-07-08 Thread John Doe

Hi,

each day I get Verify Fatal Error on my 4 scheduled verify jobs...
But when I run them manualy, they seem to work fine...
By example:

  08-Jul 05:00 backup-dir JobId 739: Start Verify JobId=739 Level=Incremental
Job=filer_Verify.2009-07-08_05.00.55
  08-Jul 05:00 backup-dir JobId 739: Fatal error: verify.c:277 Unimplemented
Verify level 73(I)
  08-Jul 05:00 backup-dir JobId 739: Error: Bacula backup-dir 2.4.2 (26Jul08):
08-Jul-2009 05:00:03
Build:  x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu redhat
JobId:  739
Job:filer_Verify.2009-07-08_05.00.55
FileSet:filer set
Verify Level:   Incremental
Client: filer
Verify JobId:   0
Verify Job: filer Backup
Start time: 08-Jul-2009 05:00:03
End time:   08-Jul-2009 05:00:03
Files Examined: 0
Non-fatal FD errors:0
FD termination status:
Termination:*** Verify Error ***

Here's one verify job:

  Job {
Name = filer Verify
JobDefs = DefaultJob_filer
Type = Verify
Level = VolumeToCatalog
Verify Job = filer Backup
Schedule = WeeklyCycle_5am
  }

and

  Schedule {
Name = WeeklyCycle_5am
Run = Full 1st sun at 5:00
Run = Differential 2nd-5th sun at 5:00
Run = Incremental mon-sat at 5:00
  }

Any idea what parameters should I check?

Thx,
JD

From: Ralf Gross ralf-li...@ralfgross.de
 You can not use a level Incremental/Differential/Full for verify jobs.

 Schedule {
   Name = Verify Toolserver
   Run = 1st sun at 21:35
   Run = 2nd-5th sun at 21:35
   Run = mon-sat at 21:35
 }

Ok, so I defined an alternate schedule without levels.

Thanks to both of you,
JD

[Bacula-users] Verify Fatal Errors and external HD best practice...

2009-03-16 Thread John Doe

Hi,

I have two newbie questions..

1. While all my verify jobs work manualy, none seem to work when scheduled...
Each day I get Verify Fatal Error on my 4 jobs.

  Start Verify JobId=719 Level=Incremental Job=filer_Verify.2009-03-14_05.00.57
  Fatal error: verify.c:277 Unimplemented Verify level 73(I)
  Error: Bacula backup-dir 2.4.2 (26Jul08): 14-Mar-2009 05:00:02

What parameters should I check?
Here's one verify job:

  Job {
Name = pc-03 Verify
JobDefs = DefaultJob_pc-03
Type = Verify
Verify Job = pc-03 Backup
Level = VolumeToCatalog
Schedule = WeeklyCycle_5am
  }

and

  Schedule {
Name = WeeklyCycle_5am
Run = Full 1st sun at 5:00
Run = Differential 2nd-5th sun at 5:00
Run = Incremental mon-sat at 5:00
  }

2. What would be the best practice with backups to an external USB HD...?
So far I use file storages and it works but I just reached the Cannot find any
appendable volumes (USB HD full)...
Here are the confs for one client:

  Schedule {
Name = WeeklyCycle_3am
Run = Full 1st sun at 3:00
Run = Differential 2nd-5th sun at 3:00
Run = Incremental mon-sat at 3:00
  }

  Client {
Name = pc-03
Address = pc-03.dom
FDPort = 9102
Catalog = MyCatalog
Password = fdpass
File Retention = 60 days
Job Retention = 6 months
AutoPrune = yes
  }

  JobDefs {
Name = DefaultJob_pc-03
Type = Backup
Level = Incremental
Schedule = WeeklyCycle_3am
Storage = FileStorage_pc-03
Messages = Standard
Pool = Full-Pool_pc-03
Full Backup Pool = Full-Pool_pc-03
Incremental Backup Pool = Incr-Pool_pc-03
Differential Backup Pool = Diff-Pool_pc-03
FileSet = pc-03 set
Client = pc-03
Priority = 10
  }

  Device {
Name = FileStorage_pc-03
Archive Device = /FILER/bacula/pc-03
Media Type = File_pc-03
Label Media = yes;
Random Access = yes;
Automatic Mount = yes;
Removable Media = no;
AlwaysOpen = no;
  }

  Pool { # Full backups recycled after 6
months
Name = Full-Pool_pc-03
Pool Type = Backup
Recycle = yes
AutoPrune = yes
Volume Retention = 12 months
Maximum Volume Jobs = 0
Label Format =
{Client}-full-${Year}-${Month:p/2/0/r}-${Day:p/2/0/r}_${NumVols}
Maximum Volumes = 0
Maximum Volume Bytes = 5000
  }

  Pool {# Differential backups recycled after 6
weeks
Name = Diff-Pool_pc-03
Pool Type = Backup
Recycle = yes
AutoPrune = yes
Volume Retention = 6 weeks
Maximum Volume Jobs = 0
Label Format =
{Client}-diff-${Year}-${Month:p/2/0/r}-${Day:p/2/0/r}_${NumVols}
Maximum Volumes = 0
Maximum Volume Bytes = 5000
  }

  Pool { # Incremental backups recycled after 2
weeks
Name = Incr-Pool_pc-03
Pool Type = Backup
Recycle = yes
AutoPrune = yes
Volume Retention = 2 weeks
Maximum Volume Jobs = 0
Label Format =
{Client}-incr-${Year}-${Month:p/2/0/r}-${Day:p/2/0/r}_${NumVols}
Maximum Volumes = 0
Maximum Volume Bytes = 5000
  }

I tried Maximum Volume Bytes but it does not seem to trigger recycling... I
guess the check is limited to one job and not the whole thing.
Am I forced to reduce the Volume Retention times by trial and error or is
there any easier solution?

Thx,
JD
