[Bacula-users] Recycling a volume.

2011-05-26 Thread Jake Debord
My goal is to have a backup job per employee. Each employee will have
their own Pool and volume.

My problem is that while testing the backups work fine, except the
volume just keeps growing and growing.
I have set the max volume size to 12G. The current file size is now
16G. I have also set the max jobs for the volume to 7 and I have now
done 10 total backups to the same volume.

I want it to hit 12G and then start writing over the old stuff. I have
the retention set to 1 hour and not sure what else to change.

TIA

have you update your volume?
isn't enough to make changes in the config file, use update volume
command from bconsole

Re: [Bacula-users] recycling a volume with Error status

Hi all,
A couple of my volumes have accumulated Error status, and so are not
being re-used. I've purged one of them and updated it's status to
Append, but Bacula then seemed to mark it 'Full' and didnt use it. I
then tried to re-label it with the same label, but that was rejected.
What's the correct procedure to make them re-usable?

Purge the volumes and bacula will then mark them for recycling when it
 thinks appropriate.

Hm. I did just purge one of them at first, but bacula still didnt seem
to want to use it.

I have 3 tapes in an experimental setup in an autochanger, and the
config is set so that they are just used round-robin. This has been
happily cycling for some weeks, but two tapes got flagged with Error
status after I stopped bacula to add another tapedrive to the
autochanger. The third tape filled up and bacula blocked waiting for a
tape. I purged one of the Error-status ones, expecting bacula to use it,
but it didnt, so I then tried changing its status to Append, with the
result as mentioned above.

Since then I've discovered that simply setting its status to Full is
sufficient. Bacula then pruned it and proceeded to re-use it.

BTW, I had a bad time with 'purge'.
I went into bconsole, issued the 'purge' command, chose the 'volume'
option and expected to be prompted for a volume-name/media-id to purge.
This didnt happen - bacula proceeded to purge all the volumes and I had
to recover the catalog from its backup.

Cheers,
Terry
