One way to see if there is a conflict with a module would be to
temporarily add it to the modules blacklist.
On ubuntu I think this is in /etc/modprobe.d/

Are you a member of the plugdev group? This seems to be a common
problem. In a terminal, type "groups".

I read on the Barry trouble shooting page that there was a conflict between
usb_storage and older versions of Barry.
