Thanks but what of importing?
Surely there must be many people with non-trivial amounts of data in
yahoo, gmail etc address books. If they want to get this into bbdb are
there no importers?
If I could get a little clarity about the formats I could write up a
python script...

There is a csv-export by http://www.robf.de/Hacking/elisp/bbdb-rf.el
but there is no real syncing with external address books.
