ls -1 (one), not
ls -1 (that's a one) list the files in a single column with no extra
kruft.

There is no scripting knowledge needed
I agree with the others, it's easier to generate the page from scratch
by scanning a folder of images and generate the correct markup than
trying to modify an existing file.
This generation can be done using Applescript or Applescript + BBEdit
or using any scripting language like Python, Perl,
