Re: Can't launch BBEdit

2021-07-19 Thread BGalindo
by the way, I had the very same problem in bbedit last week, searching this
group helped me find the answer! thanks for this dialogue.

I tried to execute a complex grep pattern in playground (which I realized
too late I could greatly simplify :-) )on a .json dataset file and bbedit
choked, I know it choked because I gave it a couple hours on my quad-pro
and it was still hung, same when I tried to restart.

thanks for the info on the startup options! I love bbedit, it is a vital
tool in my dev work, and pattern playground is handy, I just realized to be
careful with the complexity of my patterns if the playground is pointed at
a large open file.

[ANN] BBEdit 14.0

2021-07-19 Thread Rich Siegel
[List mom note: please start new threads for specific questions rather
than replying to this message. Thanks. :-)]

Good { morning, afternoon, evening },

We are pleased to announce the release and immediate availability of
BBEdit 14.0. This major upgrade adds over a hundred new features,
improvements to existing features, and minor refinements.

Here are the high points, excerpted from the "What's New in BBEdit 14"
page at .

* *Notes* - We know that many of our customers create a lot of
untitled documents for quick note-taking, and rely on BBEdit's
legendary stability and robust crash recovery to protect their
work. We've added a new "Notes" feature in BBEdit 14, which
provides a large variety of ways to create notes that
automatically save themselves, and, perhaps more important,
automatically title themselves so that you don't end up wondering
which of your 305 "untitled text" documents is the one you're
looking for.

* *Anaconda Virtual Environments* - Anaconda
(https://www.anaconda.com) is particularly popular with data
scientists, as well as with others who need to rapidly switch
between different tooling and library configurations. BBEdit 14
will use conda or miniconda to detect your virtual environments,
and provides a mechanism for switching the active environment for
use when running Unix tools and scripts from within BBEdit.

*   *Additional Built-in Languages* - BBEdit 14 adds built-in syntax
coloring and function navigation support for R, Rust, Go, some Lisp
dialects, and Pixar's Universal Scene Description (USD) format.

* *Enhanced Developer Features* - BBEdit 14 enables several new
features and significant improvements to its built-in coding aids
for developers, including:

-   Enhanced language-specific text completions;

-   Improved Find Definition;

-   Assistance for specifying function parameters;

-   New code-navigation features;

-   In-window highlighting of syntax and semantic issues;

-   Language-specific document reformatting.

These feature improvements are the result of new built-in support for
the Language Server Protocol ("LSP") by which user-installed local
"language servers" implement key language-sensitive behaviors. Specific
available features may vary by language and by server.

	We've written extensive notes about the new and improved features, what
they look like, and how they work.
	You can find those here:
.

* *Repeat Last Command* - Building on the "Commands" command from
BBEdit 13, BBEdit 14 adds a handy "Repeat Last Command" command
to the Edit menu, so that you can, well, repeat an operation
without having to make a special trip to the menu bar.

...and much more.

We encourage you to read the complete change notes for BBEdit 14.0:
. (We spent a
lot of time writing those notes, so it would be great for someone to
read them. Be that someone.)

Here are some key details on pricing and upgrades for BBEdit 13:

* The price for a single new license remains at US$49.99.

* If you purchased BBEdit 13 *directly from us* on or after Jan 1,
2021, you are eligible for a free upgrade.

We will be sending email to all eligible registered customers by
Friday, July 30, 2020. Thank you for your patience. :-)
Meanwhile you can certainly use BBEdit 14 in evaluation mode until
your new serial number arrives.

* BBEdit 13 customers who purchased between the original 13.0 release
date of October 3, 2019 and the free-upgrade cutoff date of
December

31, 2020 can upgrade for US$29.99.

* Registered customers of older BBEdit versions (2.5 through 12.6.7,
inclusive) can upgrade for US$39.99.

* BBEdit 14 is in the Mac App Store(*). If you have an active
subscription, you will have immediate access to all of BBEdit 14's
advanced features. (* At this writing, the store reports that
BBEdit

14 is "Ready for Sale", so if you don't see it, wait a while and
check back.)

* If you have been using BBEdit 11, 12 or 13 in Free Mode, BBEdit 14
will

reset your evaluation period, and you will have a full 30 days in
which to try out all of BBEdit 14's new features. After 30 days,
BBEdit 14 will return to Free Mode.
