The current b43 is very stable. Performance will depend on which model you have.
BCM4311's run at speeds close to 802.11g maximum. BCM4306's are not that good.
BCM4318 units are in between.

I would not use my $500 laptop to do what a $40 AP/router does just as well or
better. I wrote the article to show that it could be done, not that I planned to
set up an AP.

Would you suggest using b43 when creating an access point today?

I've looked into ath9k to get agn, but it is very buggy for me and
Atheros remains unresponsive.

5GHz is very desirable, but reliability much more so...
