I found that there is a serious drawback to over-friendly chickens in the
garden: digging a bed with a fork, thus revealing many juicy worms, I've
several times almost slipped a disc by having to violently abort a thrust
as
a head and neck appeared in the target area

Can I put in a word for the Maran? Quite a large bird, mottled grey and
white plumage, intelligent and friendly, laying beautiful brown eggs. A
Maran/Rhode Island Red cross is also a good choice. Tony N-S.

satisfied with Rhode Island Reds or for the variety of bird that
passes for Rhode Island in this country currently.
