I am booting off the emmc and using the SD Card for storage and data.
Using the 3.8.6 flashed image, I had the SD card mounting on boot by having
the following in the uEnv.txt on the SD card:
mmcdev=1
bootpart=1:2
mmcroot=/dev/mmcblk1p2 ro
optargs=quiet

I patched a vanilla kernel for realtime and configured it for omap3 beagle.
However, after building it using make-kpkg with DEB_HOST_ARCH=armhf
CLEAN_SOURCE=no fakeroot make-kpkg --arch=arm --subarch=omap3
--cross-compile=arm-linux-gnueabihf- --initrd --append-to-version
OK will give it a try, thanks for the tip.

one silly detail has been bothering me...
The ifconfig-reported MAC address of the usb0 port changed after the repair:
usb0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 6E:5A:F6:F0:F3:45
After RMA repair:
usb0 Link
That would probably be why it is missing.
