Just so it's understood. You do not need to install a new rootfs image in order to install, and use a newer kernel. In other words, I'm personally using Wheezy 7.8, and a 4.1.x kernel. In order to achieve this, all I did was download, and dd the 7.8 Wheezy console image, and then: apt-get update
