Over the past several days I've read a number of postings here about why
breeders ask so many questions and sometimes come off to PPO's as
aggressive and rude.
My own experience has been somewhere in the middle: I'm a first-time PPO.
Nowadays (armed with info I learned here on the Berner-L) I
Within a breed there will be found often quite a wide variation in a
particular trait. Even in breeds where retrieving is bred for this will
happen and there is no doubt that as with other innate behaviours the
ability to retrieve has to be selected for in a breeding programme.

I had a friend that owned an escapee Beagle. He went
through the invisible fencing several times and one
day never came back. Very sad.

On a light(?)note, here's my favorite: I met a lovely, well-off, older gentleman at
the dog park recently (he's now about 75, I'd say). He admired my

Romaine,
I am completely confused by your post! As the owner of the 12 Berners who
wrote a humorous post I don't see the connection with interview techniques
for puppy buyers.
I am not concerned whether someone is high or low on a perceived social

Hi Cissy-
What a heart-wrenching decision that must have been for you to turn to. Your
post did not mention that you had anyone to turn to such as Cissy's breeder,
a trainer, or a veterinarian, to help with your dog's aggression issues. It
is such a shame that we failed you. It is such a
Hi Everyone-
I don't know if this helps...but I have used all of the AOL versions, and
currently am using AOL 7.0 (only because I really don't like 8.0 at all). I
can post directly to the Berner-L, and other internet groups, without a
problem...as long as I never cut/copy paste words from
Dear fellow listers,
Unfortunately we find ourselves once again in the position of needing advice on a medical matter. Gandalf (aged 2 1/2) has developed alittle spot in each cornea. We have had Vets in Germany (personal friend of Christl's) and Switzerland check him out. They had never seen such

I've heard that Berners aren't much for fetch, but our boy loves it!
I think some are, some aren't. I couldn't believe my eyes watching a 7.5

I don't have AOL but with my Juno account I've noticed that if I reply to
a post sent on the L and Cc it to the L or have a Cc to the original

Well it finally happened. Enzo, out 4 month old bouncing ball of puppy
energy has been quite the dominant dog. When we took him to puppy class his
first month with us he would climb on all the other dogs in the class and
force them on their sides/backs. He wasn't agressive at all, just
Hi All,
I'm throwing this out to you all in hopes that can help me. I am a PPO and have been
contacting breeders. The last 3 that I spoke with, when they found out we have an
invisible fence, in lieu of a regular fence, politely informed me that they would
not sell to anyone with an
Dear list, I have been struggling to write this note. Hugo's beautiful quad
chair arrived thanks to all of you and after getting him used to the sight
and smell of it and having him wear the supports, we put him in. He was
such a good boy about cooperating with our clumsy efforts to hook him up.
Hi All!
I wanted to comment on the behavior post! I could not agree more about the
good and bad, regarding breeders and owners!
Reciently I attending two local shows and I met quite a variety of handlers
and breeders! There were two berner breeders I met in Monticello, and they

Tim,
Don't think that blindness will necessarily preclude Gandalf from
running free and enjoying life! Just a few extra commands will help
tremendously. We taught our Sam the commands, up, down, over, under, and
careful. That was about it! And when we called him, we clapped until he
came.

Hi Susan and all,
I prefer not to place puppies in homes with invisible fences -
because it is a system that fails to offer the puppy any protection from
other dogs, kids, etc. that may enter the property and cause harm.
We got along just fine with our invisible
Hi All,
I will be doing photos in Long Beach, assisted by the lovely Joye Neff -
Now make sure you go and grab this opportunity to have Pat take one of her
spectacular pics!
We'll be doing them from Wednesday through Saturday, with time
off for Berner-Garde board meetings and the like. I
I second the titles, Don't Shoot The Dog (Karen Pryor) and The Culture
Clash (Jean Donaldson). Excellent books! I'd also add How To Teach A New
Dog Old Tricks (Ian Dunbar). It has lots of easy to follow/understand
information on teaching dogs manners and helping them to be family
companions.
When looking for a pup, Deanna and I originally looked at Saints, and met
with two breeders, then looked at Leonbergers, again meeting two breeders.
While all four people were very nice, only one Saint breeder and one Leo
breeder actually let us interact with the dogs. The other two let us look

We've had 2 goldens and a black lab, both with using the invisible fence.
As they were intelligent animals, once trained, (which took no time at all)
they realized that when they got the audible tone to back off and all was
well. We never had a problem with it. I know they get a slight shock
Hello All;
I need some help from you long-time trainers out there on the L. I am
instructing my first Puppy Kindergarten class at our training club.
Klarsson gets to go along and be a demo dog and for a lot of the students,
it is the first real BMD that they have seen.
Anyway, we are trying to
