I love Stephen Huneck's work -- he has 3 picture books for kids out with lovely illustrations of his beloved (and now deceased) black Lab Sally. "Sally Goes to the Beach," "Sally Goes to the Mountains" and "Sally Goes to the Farm." I used them frequently in my story times for toddlers at the Borders Books Shop I work at. His Dog Chapel book is very moving. I'd love to visit it some day.
While we're on the topic, other great dog books for kids are -- Circle Dogs -- Kevin Henkes Dog Heaven (and Cat Heaven!) -- Cynthia Rylant (this book is wonderful comfort for anyone who has lost a companion animal. The Tenth Good Thing About Barney -- can't remember the author, but it a gentle way to help children through the loss of a pet. A Dog Day -- can't remember the author here either, but it is a wordless book, but with great illustrations. The story is about a dog who is thrown from a car and he wanders around until he is picked up by someone else. Another terrific (but Out of Print!) book is Mountain Dog Rescue: A Story of a Bernese Mountain Dog by Coleen Hubbard. It is a middle reader and features Jon and his dog, Mogul, who end up saving Jon's older brother's life in a snowstorm. It has nice details about Berners and shows a positive relationship between a boy and a dog. Mogul, by the way, LOVES to pull things!! If anyone ever needs book recommendations just drop me an email! I love to talk books. Catherin Young Madison WI Shadow & Mickey
