Is is possible for the windows SqueezePlay app to control a hardware
player...just like a real SqueezePlay hardware client (i.e.
SBController, SBTouch) can? I don't see a Select Player menu item
anywhere.

In SqueezePlay I have a 'Choose Player' menu item in Settings, same as
on the Touch.

It certainly can.
Why would a UNC path for a cover permit the generation of some sizes of
artwork thumbnails but not others?

yes this will work. I use SP on my laptop to control all the players at
my house. You may have to go to Settings HOME MENU then tick the box
next to choose player. This will put it on
Good news - OK to date. But how do I now revert to a stable setup?

It should be stable... But you could reinstall the standard firmware to
revert to the standard setup.
