Hi,
Download stats for 2.66 windows, at blender.org last month:
.exe: 73k
.zip 17k
.7z 480
Yes, only 480. The vast majority loads the exe still :)

Thomas,
You talked about the pros and cons of the *formats* but not of the
pros and cons of your proposal. What maintenance is really involved
in taking a folder of files and compressing it into two archives versus
one?
The pros include more choice and much more convenience for the
user. The
It's stupid to have 3 binaries for Windows (*2) and building etc is not
really a batch process for me. ;)
We have the installer (.exe) for convenience and that is probably the
format that is used by most people. This will stay.
For the archives though I'd like a change.
1) Only provide 7z

Hi,
.zip is natively supported on Windows. Not only that, it is the most
supported format. So, I don't think there is good reason to drop it
except for size. Also, 7z is only 30% percent smaller, which makes a
difference only ~10 seconds to download on good connection. Self

Hi everybody,
I'd like to drop .zip archives for our windows releases.
At the moment we provide .exe (Installer version) and .zip and .7z

Hi,
ok I see the resistance here. :)
I introduced 7z a few months ago, in the hope it will be a progress
(smaller file size and faster download).
On Linux and Mac we only have 1 archive and people are happy with it.
Anyway, I am not willing to keep providing all 3 versions (this is also

I personally love 7-Zip, but I think it is not the defacto standard and is
mostly unknown in the Windows community at large. According the the steam
software survey 45% of Windows users have Winrar installed. 18% have 7-zip
installed. I believe (but don't know) that winrar opens 7z files. That

Those stats probably show that 55% of Steam users in the dark, not

I also am against removing the most popular (and built into the OS)
archive format known to man out of convenience for the packager. This
seems more like a need for packaging automation, IMHO. I tend to agree
with you that if you want to remove any format, 7z should go before
zip does.

Hi,
I already said that I will drop 7z again and keep .exe and .zip. No need
for further discussion.

Maybe we should start a pool on blenderartists?
From my observation most of the experienced users choose 7z over zip (30%
better compression is actually matter), while not experienced users do not
even know how to use zip, so they always chose installer (some of them
actually do not know how
Mikhail,
Anyway pool on blenderartists should show actual users preferences.
A pool on BlenderArtists could show that a majority of windows users can
open 7z, but it will remain that *ALL* of them can open zip.

Not a Windows user, but I seriously wonder what people who are not able
to open a .7z could do with Blender? 3D programs are among the most
complex pieces of software, so if they can’t even manage to find how to
extract some .7z...

Mikhail,
+1 for keeping zip AND 7z!
I often need a portable blender and therefore download an archive, not
exe. 7z is about the size of the exe, while zip is quite larger and
internet connection isn't always fast...

That might be a fair comment about some users, but
For me, as a windows user, the installer is the most familiar medium
so I don't care about the form the compressed format comes in. Since
the installer is quite large and is the most official, I don't mind
having a slightly bigger zip over 7-zip(which is my favourite unzipper
too btw). The
