At the risk of continuing an off-topic thread:

I have toyed with trying to find a cheap Stratum-1 server for home.
I've had success with a Raspberry Pi & GPS. You can build a very
respectable stratum 1 server for less than USD $200, if you can handle a soldering
iron and build a Linux kernel.

The RPi is nominally $35 - but add a case, power supply, SD card etc and it's closer to $100 - depending on what you have on-hand. You need a monitor, KB & mouse to get started (configured), but not thereafter (SSH will do). A GPS receiver will cost about $70. The hockey puck version (e.g. GPS18x lVC) is a reasonable choice and can be placed outdoors, though it needs a level shifter; or the ceramic MCMs (e.g Adafruit 746) at $40 - but you'll probably spend another $40 on antenna & battery backup. It will run quite happily on an SD card; an external disk isn't required. Might want a small UPS.

If you build NTP and a kernel with PPS support, you end up with a pretty stable server. Doesn't use much power (~5W).

For an interface to the 18x LVC, see http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=1970&start=194

If you want multiple servers, the second one usually costs less because you kept all the bootstrapping supplies.

Further discussion should probably find another list...
