Simcoe county (west of Lakes Couchiching and Simcoe) offered some excellent
birding for my team's annual Baillie Birdathon yesterday. We usually do our
birdathon within the boundaries of York Region but decided we'd give Simcoe a

As with many places in Ontario, spring migration has been gathering steam up
here north of Toronto. Monday was a red-letter day with three VERY interesting
birds noted: one was a late SNOWY OWL photographed on a Keswick dock, another
was the SNOWY EGRET reported by Doug McRae north of
Apologies for not posting sooner but cataract surgery on Monday (yes, I'm
only 51) has made computer work a bit of an adventure this week. Anyway,
last Sunday at Tiny Marsh the OFO Trip I tried to lead was reduced to about 2.5
hours of rain-birding before we packed it in at lunch time.
Prior to the arrival of this recent winter wallop, the first days
of April provided local birders with some good weather and good birds. On
April 1st Craig Corcoran observed an early OSPREY along Ravenshoe Road in SW
Keswick. What is likely the same bird was reported on subsequent days
Yesterday at noon there were two adult Bald Eagles flying together at the west
end of Ravenshoe Rd. in Keswick. They could be the possible nesters Peter
Wukasch has posted about. They were not far from the active heronry situated
north of Ravenshoe behind the orange farm buildings.

Eight members of the Richmond Hill Naturalists joined me for an enjoyable
excursion in search of spring migrants this morning. We started by hiking
along the Oak Ridges Trail north of King City, heading east into the Seneca
College property. Highights there were Tundra Swan (4 whooping in
To add to the York region report posted yesterday, Kevin Shackleton observed a
white adult Snow Goose on the south side of Hochreiter Road late yesterday
afternoon.
Hochreiter Rd. runs west from Bathurst St. just northwest of Holland Landing
(just past where the GGOW was a few weeks ago).
