Hello everyone,
With the Ivory Gull 'missing' I thought some more mediocre winter birds
may be of interest again.

A pretty intensive search of the Long Point area on Sunday produced a few
good winter birds, mostly around the Old Cut Field Station and the Long Point
Provincial Park.

Eastern Phoebe (1) - Old Cut Field Station

    E. White-crowned Sparrow (1) - Old Cut Field Station

White-throated Sparrow (12) - Old Cut Field Station and Provincial Park

Field Sparrow (8) - Long Point Provincial Park - in the large gravel
parking lot paralleling the beach

Long-eared Owl (1) - Scots Pine stand at the entrance to the Provincial
Park.

Glaucous Gull (1) - One first winter bird on the ice of the inner bay,
viewed from the causeway at Big Creek

    Good Birding,

THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 5:00 pm, SUNDAY JANUARY 15, 2006

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

The stars of the local avian show this week were a male YELLOW-
HEADED BLACKBIRD and a BOREAL CHICKADEE, both in the community of
Forest Park east of Embrun, and a Hermit Thrush at a feeder in
Kanata. The blackbird has been seen regularly every day since
January 9th, on or near the property at #23 Manitou; it is usually
associating with European Starlings. There is no need to enter
the property to view the feeder which the bird occasionally
visits, but please do not block the laneways in the neighbourhood.
The BOREAL CHICKADEE has also been seen on or near this property
since the 9th; it was still present on the 14th. The Hermit
Thrush has been visiting a feeder at #131 Palomino Dr. for approx.
2 weeks and was still here on the afternoon of the 15th. The
feeder is in the back of the property and birders are welcome, but
please approach along the fence line to the garage on the left
side, and do not enter the backyard past the corner of the house.

Other birds of note included the following: A female Lesser Scaup
and a female Hooded Merganser on the Rideau River at Manotick on
the 8th, a male Bufflehead and a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on the
Ottawa River in the Remic rapids near the Champlain bridge on the
13th. A male Barrow's and the male Common X Barrow's hybrid were
also seen again on the Rideau River in the vicinity of the Rideau
Tennis Club on the 15th. Individual Peregrine Falcon sightings
came from Billings Bridge on the 10th, and the Des Chenes Lookout
on the Ottawa River on the 13th. Fourteen Wild Turkeys were seen
resting under the feeders on March Valley Rd. near Riddell Dr. on
the 12th, and a single ambitious Ring-billed Gull was circling
over Carling and Churchill Aves. on the 12th as well. At least 2
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue to winter in Constance Bay and
were most recently seen on the 13th. A Fox Sparrow, 1st reported
back on Dec. 18th, was still at a feeder at #1320 Lassiter Terrace
in Beacon Hill North on Jan. 15th. Several reports of single Red-
winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles came in from various
locations, and a flock of up to 24 Brown-headed Cowbirds has also
been present from the 10th through the 12th, near the corner of
Russell Rd. and Boundary Rd. in Carlsbad Springs east of Ottawa.

Bohemian Waxwings and Pine Grosbeaks continue to be reported from
several locations. At least 20 White-winged Crossbills were noted
on Queen Mary St. just east of downtown Ottawa on the 15th, and
approx. 30 Common Redpolls were with a large number of American
Goldfinches at feeders on O'Hara Dr. off Kerwin Rd. on the 12th.
Thank you - Good Birding!
