Sent from my Galaxy Tab® S2 The 14th annual Casselman - Forêt Larose CBC was held on January 2, 2018. Twenty field participants braved the frigid - 31°C temperatures with a slight wind. A light fine snowfall decreased our visibility making bird identification difficult at times. A total of 40 species were tallied, the lowest, tying 2 other counts (2004 & 2005) being the first and second in the history of the count. This total is below our 14th-year average of 44.5. The total individual birds was 5149 slightly lower than our 5972 average. Our cumulative species count remains at 78, as no new species were discovered. Record High: Dark-eyed Junco 414 ( 363 in 2014) Tied Record: Common Crackle 1 (2016, 2015, 21012, & 2007)Bald Eagle 9 (2017)Red-tailed Hawk 12 (2010 & 2016) Noteworthy: Gull numbers were low but all expected species were found at the Laflèche dump. Snowy Owl numbers 16, was 2nd best to 31 found in 2013. Red-tailed Hawk numbers were 1 below the record of 12. Waterfowl numbers were low as the Nation River was frozen and the northern finch numbers were nonexistant. For the second year in a row, no Gray Partridges were found.
Thank you to all the birders for braving that extreme weather!!!
