Puffy white clouds lingered late into the day, providing us with an optimal spotting background. Despite the moderate northeast wind, clearer skies and a warming sun left us less chilled than recent outings. Raptor Observations: Just one of those spectacular late October days by the lake! There were birds everywhere. Plenty of variety and more than enough volume to keep us busy from start to finish. Red-tailed Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk and Turkey Vulture had their best showing of the fall. And we added our first Rough-legged Hawk of the season in addition to our second Golden Eagle. But Red-tailed Hawks made the biggest impression, pushing past by the dozen in the late afternoon and early evening. Red-shouldered Hawks were no slouches, either, heartily joining in the festivities. And not to be outshone, Turkey Vultures required near-constant vigilance, forming into no less than three gargantuan, awe-inspiring streams during the late afternoon. Non-raptor Observations: American Crow (80000+), Red-winged Blackbird (600+), Rusty Blackbird (75+), Blue Jay (400+), Tree Swallow (120+), Pine Siskin (40+), Dark-eyed Junco (15), White-crowned Sparrow (1), White-throated Sparrow (3), American Tree Sparrow (2), Yellow-rumped Warbler (1), Forster's Tern (25+), Caspian Tern (2), Bonaparte's Gull (6), Northern Pintail (1) Predictions: Sunny with moderate west wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein (steinj...@gmail.com) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
