Highlights: Solid lake ice in these parts means the birding has become less favourable with very little in the way of open water. Fluctuating temperatures have brought mini freeze-thaw conditions but nothing in the way of new birds. These highlights cover the last 2 weeks: TRUMPETER SWAN - birds continue to be regularly seen on the Rideau system, particularly at Outlet, Charleston Lake, Upper and Lower Brewer's Mills, Bedford Mills and Chaffey's Locks. NORTHERN PINTAIL - at least 3 male birds are present in the Kingston area, with 1 regularly at either the ferry dock or Invista. Two were seen at New Canal Lock, Wolfe Island on 21st. Another bird has also been seen at Chaffey's Lock. WOOD DUCK - a single female has been seen frequently at either Invista or the Wolfe Island ferry dock, Kingston. BARROW'S GOLDENEYE - 1-2 birds are being seen fairly regularly at Fisher's Landing, NY (just across the border from the Ivy Lea Bridge). Presumably the same male was seen on the Canadian side at Ivy Lea village on 20th. HORNED GREBE - a single bird, first seen on 13th, continues at Invista, Kingston. SNOWY OWL - birds continue to be regularly seen on Wolfe (where 22 were tallied on 25th) and Amherst Islands though they are no longer quite so easy to see. All farmland on both islands is private - please no trespassing. YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER - a continuing bird was seen near Lower Brewer's Mills on 20th. GYRFALCON - a spectacular grey adult was seen on 17th on the ferry crossing to Wolfe Island. It was subsequently seen at the same location on 20th, 23rd and 24th but not since. PEREGRINE FALCON - the resident downtown Kingston pair have been seen more frequently over the last couple of weeks. CAROLINA WREN - a continuing single bird visited a feeder in Kingston on 14th. RUSTY BLACKBIRD - a single male was present at Button Bay, Wolfe Island on 19th-20th. RED CROSSBILL - birds were seen near Verona on 15th and 21st. They are being seen more regularly just north of Hwy 7 in the Kaladar and Clarendon Station areas, where Black-backed Woodpecker, White-winged Crossbill and Pine Siskin have all also been seen. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property in the recording area, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy <http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/birding/KFN_sensitive_sightings_policy. pdf> . Please note that you must be a member of Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) or be accompanied by a member to access the Martin Edwards Reserve. As always, a big thank you goes to all those who have submitted sightings directly or via eBird. Mark. Mark D.
