Highlights:

A return to colder conditions with northerly winds for most of the week
brought fresh 'frustration' to birders eagerly anticipating spring. A couple
of 'first of year' sightings were reported but, once again, no real
rarities. Here are the highlights of the last week:

SNOW GOOSE - The only birds were 4 seen on Wolfe island on 1st.

TUNDRA SWAN - scarce this spring, 6 birds were seen on 2nd Line, Wolfe
Island on 6th.

BLUE-WINGED TEAL - two birds were seen on Russell Road, near Lansdowne on
2nd.

NORTHERN SHOVELER - the only report was of 12 birds at Perch River, NY on
2nd.

GOLDEN EAGLE - a single bird was reported from Amherst Island on 1st.

NORTHERN GOSHAWK - an immature bird was seen near Crosby on 1st.

BONAPARTE'S GULL - first birds were seen in Kingston's Inner Harbour on 2nd.

ICELAND GULL - a 1st year bird was seen at the east end of Howe Island on
1st.

SANDHILL CRANE - a single bird was seen at Verona on 1st.

SNOWY OWL - birds still continue on Wolfe and Amherst Islands in reasonable
numbers. All farmland on both islands is private - please no trespassing.
Other birds are being seen at various locations on the mainland as they move
north.

LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE - birds had returned to Napanee Plains IBA as of 2nd.

TUFTED TITMOUSE - seen remarkably far inland on the Canadian Shield, a
single bird was present at feeders at Bedford Mills on 3rd.

LAPLAND LONGSPUR - 26 birds, many in breeding plumage, were seen on 5th
Line, Wolfe Island on 1st.

PINE WARBLER - an early record of 2 birds, present from 1st to 3rd was
received from Perth Road Village.

CHIPPING SPARROW - an early bird was present at Perth Road Village on 1st.

RUSTY BLACKBIRD - not yet present in any numbers, 5 were seen near Godfrey
on 6th.

In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property in the recording
area, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings
Policy
<http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/birding/KFN_sensitive_sightings_policy.
pdf> . Please note that you must be a member of Kingston Field Naturalists
(KFN) or be accompanied by a member to access the Martin Edwards Reserve.

As always, a big thank you goes to all those who have submitted sightings
directly or via eBird.

Mark.
