Highlights:

The extreme cold lasted through to Wednesday but at this time the extent of
winter ice had expanded way out into the lake. By Friday, however, the south
shore of Wolfe Island, at least was once again open. It was quiet this week
but here are the highlights:

TRUMPETER SWAN - the incredible number of birds seen on the Rideau system
continues with 108 birds at Outlet, Charleston Lake on 8th with birds also
present at many other locations including Upper and Lower Brewer's Mills,
Bedford Mills and Chaffey's Locks.

NORTHERN PINTAIL - a male was seen at Invista on 7th and 10th with another
at the Wolfe Island ferry on 10th and 2 at Chaffey's Locks on 11th.

WOOD DUCK - birds continued at Sydenham this week with another seen at
Invista on 7th and Verona on 9th.

RED-NECKED GREBE - one was seen on the crossing to Wolfe Island on 11th.

NORTHERN GOSHAWK - a nice adult was seen on Perth Road on 6th.

ICELAND GULL - not a good year for this species, one was seen at the
Joyceville organic waste facility on 10th with another at Lansdowne Dump the
same day.

SNOWY OWL - birds continue to be regularly seen on Wolfe and Amherst Islands
though numbers/sightings have dropped. All farmland on both islands is
private - please no trespassing.

YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER - continuing birds were seen near Lower Brewer's
Mills and Battersea this week.

PEREGRINE FALCON - 2 birds were seen in Kingston on 7th, with singles on
10th and 11th.

CAROLINA WREN - a single bird visited a feeder in Kingston on 8th.

RUSTY BLACKBIRD - a continuing bird is being seen daily at a feeder near
Millhaven.

In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property in the recording
area, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings
Policy
<http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/birding/KFN_sensitive_sightings_policy.
pdf> . Please note that you must be a member of Kingston Field Naturalists
(KFN) or be accompanied by a member to access the Martin Edwards Reserve.

As always, a big thank you goes to all those who have submitted sightings
directly or via eBird.

Mark.
