Hi Birders, My girlfriend, Lillian Knopf, and I spent a great weekend birding the island this weekend. Activity was good, and diversity (113 species on the island) was good-excellent, for the time of year. Our highlights are below:
Blue Grosbeak - we found a first-alternate (near-adult) at Fish Point, today at 2pm. For more details, see our ebird checklist, below. Willet - a flock of 24 was present on the beach at Scudder at noon today. Prothonotary Warbler - 1 first-alternate male was seen briefly yesterday and today at Fish Point. It sang briefly - hopefully he'll stick around to breed! Louisiana Waterthrush - 1 bird was present this morning in the big slough at Fish Point. Glaucous Gull - 1 SY bird was at Fish Point yesterday morning. Northern Mockingbird - 2 birds on the island today. In total we had 11 species of Warblers, and several firsts-of-the-year: Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Warbling Vireo, Baltimore Oriole, Eastern Kingbird and Red-headed Woodpecker http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S13904304 http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S13923909 On the way down (Friday), we stopped at Erieau to look for the Lark Sparrow. After about 15 minutes we managed to spot it, though I haven't heard if its still around. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S13895609 >From Erieau, we headed almost straight for the ferry (6pm), stopping very >briefly at Hillman. At the bridge we found 2 Long-billed Dowitchers (amongst >the usual suspects). Directions: for directions on birding Pelee Island its likely best to email me privately - I'd be glad to tell you about one of the best birding spots in Ontario!
