With the passing of Douglas S. Miller at age 100, Ontario loses its birder with
the longest tenure in our province.
With his first birding in the 1920s, by the mid-1930s, 1940s and 1950s Doug's
fingerprints were all over the birding and ornithology scene in the Toronto

Just a note that an adult unknown sex Fox sparrow was observed feeding on the
edge of North Road about 300 m north of Beach Line earlier today around 11 am.

profile at Presqu'ile Provincial Park this week, most sightings taking
place from inside heated buildings.

There were no real highlights this week, as Ottawa fully settled into
winter. There were 3 local Christmas Bird Counts,
I found a Purple Sandpiper at Colonel Samuel Smith Park late this
afternoon. It was feeding along the south shore, about 100 metres west of
Whimbrel Point. There is heavy ice cover on the shoreline, so there aren't
a lot of exposed rocks.
No luck with the Tufted Duck, but I could see a large

under that name since 1970 but is actually a continuation of the Pakenham
CBC, which started in 1925, and the Arnprior CBC, which started in 1913.
