[Ontbirds] Slaty-backed Gull - North Bay Landfill Site

2018-12-11 Thread Brian Young via ONTBIRDS
Hello Ontbirders,

I am copying an email from Michelle Cross, who is the Co-ordinator of
Landfill Operations at the North Bay landfill site. This was one of the main
areas the Slaty-backed Gull was visiting in late November and early December
of this year. Michelle and her staff were very kind and helpful, allowing us
to see the this fantastic bird. Please see her comments below;

"It's Michelle from the City of North Bay :) it was great to meet you and
your wife a couple of weeks ago. since your visit we have had several other
interested people appear to see this crazy gull. I hope you ended up with a
photo of it in the end. I am writing because I am looking for a bit of a
favour. I'm wondering if you know of a birding forum that I could post a
message to about our landfill. I need to inform people that they need to
contact me directly to set up an escort for when they plan to be on site.
I'm not able to allow unescorted folks in anymore at all. Everyone has been
so respectful that I'm sure this won't be an issue but moving forward I'd
like to make sure that no one is caught off guard."

Michelle, thank you again for your great hospitality.

Cheers,

Brian Young

[Ontbirds] Slaty-backed Gull - North Bay Landfill

2018-12-01 Thread Brian Young via ONTBIRDS
Hello,

As of yesterday afternoon, the Slaty-backed Gull was still visiting the
North Bay landfill site, located on Sand Dam Rd, approx. 30 km north on
Highway 11 from town of North Bay.

With the great help of other birders from the Ottawa area, we were able to
see the adult gull, which was in non-breeding plumage. There are many Bald
Eagle of different ages keeping all the birds at the site nervous, and often
pushing them into flight.

Among other gulls seen, there was at least one Lesser Black-backed Gull, a
small number of Great Black-backed, Glaucous, Iceland, with a larger number
of Herring Gulls.

Snow Bunting and Common Redpoll were seen throughout the day also.

Cheers,

Brian Young
