Hi All, Well...today was an almost instant replay of yesterday....only better!
It again started slowly.... but by 8:00 a.m. the Broadwings started to take flight...and they just kept coming. The total birds for the day was 40,618....a really excellent count with the bulk being Broadwings (39,445). The top hour was again 11-12 with 20,812 Broadwings...typical for their peak midday. I'm told that at one point there were no less than 5 separate kettles in sight of the counters at one time! The Sharpies were on the move again today with another 814 tallied. Also a strong showing of Bald Eagles (36). of which 15 were adults. Though we have to be very careful not to double count the local Bald Eagle family groups....today's eagles were up with the Broadwings and heading westward with no backtracking to the east. A slightly higher count of Kestrels (271) as compared to yesterday. Of note was the first Red-shouldered Hawk of the season...a bit early but we've had one or two at in this timeframe in previous years. Tomorrow (Thursday) is calling for rain which will likely hold up the birds...but Friday again looks promising with N winds and lots of sunshine predicted. For directions and events (Open House Weekend 2 is this weekend) check out the HCF website at the following link: http://www.ezlink.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/hcf_directions.htm Good birding! Dave P.S. For those that've been checking the HMANA website for the Hawk Cliff numbers...my apologies....I've only been able to get them entered for up to the 1st of September. I'm hoping to catch up with the data entry by this weekend. I will continue to post to ONTBIRDS so at least folks know what's being seen and to let you know when we might see good flights. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
