Highlights of the many reports received May 5 through May 12 from the Niagara Frontier Region. May 7, an exceptionally rare WESTERN TANAGER in the Village of Williamsville in Amherst. First discovered at backyard feeder in the village, and re-found later in the day by the tennis club building at nearby Amherst State Park. There are less than five records of WESTERN TANAGER in the BOS archives. An obscure find at Forest Lawn in Buffalo - a roosting EASTERN WHIP-POOR-WILL on May 6. Migration time is now, and the changing weather in the next few days may bring more migrants closer to the ground. Twenty-three warbler species were reported this week. Highlighted by one or two GOLDEN-WING. WARBLERS at Forest Lawn. Other warblers ranged from the early migrant PINE WARBLER to the late migrant BLACKPOLL WARBLER. Along with the warblers - RUBY-T. HUMMINGBIRD, GR. CR. FLYCATCHER, EASTERN KINGBIRD, YELLOW-THR. VIREO, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, MARSH WREN, BL.-GR. GNATCATCHER, RUBY-CR. KINGLET, VEERY, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, WOOD THRUSH, BROWN THRASHER, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, WHITE-THR. SPARROW, WHITE-CR. SPARROW, SCARLET TANAGER, ROSE-BR. GROSBEAK, INDIGO BUNTING, BOBOLINK, BALTIMORE ORIOLE and PURPLE FINCH. Also, single RUSTY BLACKBIRDS at Forest Lawn and in the Chautauqua County Town of Sheridan. VESPER SPARROW in the vineyards in Sheridan. And small numbers of PINE SISKINS a three locations. Shorebirds add even more migrants as May progresses. May 10, in Sheridan, SHORT-B. DOWITCHER plus SPOTTED SANDPIPER, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS and LEAST SANDPIPER. Other shorebirds - RUDDY TURNSTONE on the Lake Erie shore in Ontario, DUNLIN and WILSON'S SNIPE in Batavia, GREATER YELLOWLEGS at Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo, and LEAST SANDPIPERS on Ridge Lea Road in Amherst.
