Weather: Skies were clear all day - no clouds. Light northwesterly winds in the morning hours gradually shifted to light south winds for the afternoon hours. Raptor Observations: Migration was on the slow side during the early morning, with only a handful of raptors recorded. However, 2 nonmigratory Peregrine Falcons were seen hunting and interacting over Lake Erie, and a "local" Merlin was spotted over Gibraltar - providing some great Falcon excitement! Starting mid-day and through the afternoon, flight was steady. Several large Broad-winged Hawk kettles were observed north of the count location, with 574 birds counted. Sharp-shinned Hawks had a great showing today with 272 birds total - highest count thus far for 2016. Kestrels and Northern Harriers were in good numbers as well. Non-raptor Observations: Monarchs were certainly on the move today, with 127 tallied. Blue Jays were also seen in the largest flocks yet this year, with several flocks of 100+ birds. Predictions: Tomorrow's weather conditions should be similar to today - sunny and warm. Winds will be light and from the north - with good potential for Broad-winged flight. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Detroit River Hawk Watch (greg_norw...@fws.gov) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
